Healthy Or Annoying?

All of GSB’s students partake in a bi annual running event. On September 13th most of the schools students did the test. In this event the students run back and forth in the gym as long as they can, most 8th graders averaged about 30 times when the standard is 24. A 8th grade boy got the highest in the 8th grade b class with a total 70 laps. The whole class is involved with cheering on everybody. But as much fun and team building this activity is, is it necessary? Most students will probably say no as a normal human being would when it comes to running, but why is this test still actively used in public schools. Well that's because it is a standard and basically a public school law that tells administrators

The 300 yard shuttle run is mainly a test of anaerobic capacity, or the ability to exert maximal effort over a short period of time. For this reason, this particular evaluation would prove most beneficial for an athlete looking to improve quickness and explosive power in their respective sports. Most likely this test would be used to evaluate athletic ability and skills for athletes in sports that require speed, agility, and quickness such as football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. This test can help a strength and conditioning coach pinpoint flaws in an athlete’s running mechanics, footwork, flexibility, and power.…

The semester is just beginning and adjusting to Public Health 181 has given me an insight on the goals and challenges for the NFL 60 challenge. My group members and I are currently coming up with ideas on what kind of physical activities we can utilize for children to have entertaining sessions. We have not been able to plan properly on the research project itself because our point of contact has not spoken to us yet, but we exchanged numbers so we can all keep each other updated if anything new arises. While my group members and I are waiting for our point of contact, I have been researching more thoroughly on what the NFL 60 challenge is and found a goal that I want to accomplish once I start implementing this research project.…

The PIAA’s Elephant in the Room The question of whether the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) should separate public and private schools into their own divisions has been a topic of discussion for years. As a product of 14 years of Catholic education, I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in athletics during my high school career. Many of the teams that we played were public school teams from small communities where athletics were almost more important than an education. Unfortunately, I have witnessed firsthand the animosity that has surfaced between public and private schools.…

For some time, schools have been debating whether they should get rid of sports to help students improve their education. Many studies have found that schools that provide after school athletics are shown to have a lower academic rate. Therefore, school sports should be cut off because they are a distraction from school work, cost a great deal of money, and cause fatigue. Many student athletes know that their extra-curricular sports may take away from their education.…

Students will certainly agree; they would no longer have to sit through dreadful hours of test taking. One study showed that the average eleventh grader spent 27 days of the year testing. By removing testing, the amount of stress and anxiety felt by students would significantly decrease. Due to testing, students may look at themselves as failures as early as kindergarten. Financially, this decision would appeal to both parents and taxpayers.…

The evaluation plan for the Saucony Run for Good uses many different types of evaluation methods. The first evaluation in which teachers “conduct written quarterly skill assessments in the PE curriculum, with an emphasis on monitoring progress in meeting distance and timed running goals for each student in grades K-8” utilizes a quantitative and summative evaluation. The next evaluation utilizes fitness assessment reports which will be “ completed twice yearly, and include comparative results from program inception in major health related areas of physical fitness, for each student in grades 1-8”. This is an example of a quantitative benchmark evaluation. Another quantitative benchmark evaluation is utilized when the Program Director and school…

Of all the aspects of high school, participating in sports is a mutual interest of the students. High school sports are events where students can showcase their talents, learn valuable life lessons, and stay active in their years of adolescence. “In The Case Against High School Sports,” Amanda Ripley argues that high school sports should be terminated because they are expensive and prioritized over education and safety. In conclusion, schools should get rid of standardized testing. They are a large waste of time, they do not improve students’ education, and they discriminate between “winners” and “losers”. Originally, these tests were supposed to measure your intelligence and predict how well your capacity to learn is. But now, standardized tests are just big problems that don’t help teachers nor students.…

Being a student athlete is a wonderful thing in high school, despite a lot of people only acknowledge the athlete part and not the student part. I believe that academics come first and if a high school student wants to be an athlete, then getting good grades should be a requirement. It should be mandatory for teachers and coaches to check the grades of student athletes weekly to determine whether students are performing academically well or not. The students that aren’t doing well should be dismissed from any further games and practices until their grades improve. It is important that student athletes maintain good grades because the work that they put into their school performance carries with them through life, putting too much of an emphasis…
