With Manning’s sculpture The Future Lady Killer a devilish baby is in a worn out crib. His inspiration stemmed from the baby onesies for boys that say on the front “future lady killer” meaning he will be irresistible and attract a ton of girls when he grows up into a man. However from Manning’s humorous perspective we see in literal terms he will actually grow up to be a murderer. Since the crib was made from old rusted cut wire and wood with a rustic old look it creates a disturbing cage like quality as if to contain an animal for the piece.…

‘The Holy Trinity’, painted 1425, near the beginning of the Italian renaissance for art, is a fresco painting located at the Santa Maria Novella in Florence. Standing at 667 cm x 317 cm, the painting’s proportions overall are about 3:1 vertical-to-horizontal. The was painting originally intended to face the entrance, now situated to the left of the entrance, with a lot of thought going into how the painting would immediately impact the viewer using their line of sight from entrance to painting. The painting also features an altar that has been used, the fresco reflecting that with traces of candle smoke marking the fresco. I recently went to the Ulrich Art Museum on the Wichita State Campus. This museum had many works of the Spanish painter Joan Miro, who lived from 1893-1983. Living through major events, such as World War I, the Spanish Civil War, and World War II could have affected the interpretations of his artwork in that era. His modern artwork uses an abstractness that causes the viewer to have their own interpretation on the work, so it might be drastically different than his intentions. I have chosen to analyze two of his paintings that he painted in the early-to-mid 1900’s.…

The qualifications for art are very subjective. What one individual may call beautiful or a profound critique on modern society another may completely disregard. Andy Warhol, who has come to be considered “as one of the 20th century’s major artistic innovators” (8-7), was not initially recieved with as much respect and admiration. The general opinion initially given to Warhol’s art is likely similar to the opinion Hap, the dairy farmer in “The soul of Capitalism,” would have held.…
