The purpose of the first lab was familiarize the class with phase behavior using a PVT Simulator. PVT is an acronym for Pressure, Temperature, and Volume. The PVT Simulator is a program on the computer called PVTLab. Phase behavior experiments can be done using an actual PVT apparatus but they are very expensive and the experiments would take hours to complete. With the simulator one can easily imitate a real world scenario and it takes only mere minutes to complete an experiment. To do this one presses F5 and is then asked how much Mercury to remove. Make sure when removing Mercury to put a minus sign before the amount one wishes to extract; it would be positive if one was adding Mercury to the cell. Also be sure to document the numerical values for the volume of gas and liquid, amount of Hg removed, and the pressure, in a table, every time you remove Mercury. Keep removing Mercury until the bubble point is found. The bubble point is reached when there is 0.002 or 0.001 cc of gas is shown in the cell. When both a liquid and gas are in the cell press F6 every time Hg is removed, this activates the liquid circulation pump which ensures the cell maintains equilibrium. Continue this process until the dew point is found. The dew point is when there is 0.002 or 0.001 cc of liquid in in the cell. At some point during the experiment the hand pump will have to be emptied because it can only hold about 30.000 cc of Hg. To do this close valve 08, open valve 10, and empty the hand pump, do it is the order stated or the program will say “BOOM,” in the simulator you have to start all over but in real life you would have blown up the apparatus. Removed Mercury a few more times so that there are a more points after the dew point because a graph will be made of the table that you have been making while doing the
