Personal Reflection Paper On Food Insecurity

The most impactful part of my service was the classroom experience and as well as volunteering for Potluck in the Park. These two aspects of the PSU Hunger Capstone has really helped me not only opened in learning more in depth of how severe the issue of food insecurity is but as well as how vital my job at the pantry is. Along with that, taking the capstone has really made me think about my role and start getting me to think of ideas I can incorporate into the pantry. With Potluck in the Park, it has definitely been an eye-opening, hands-on experience for me working with a huge hungry population. Prior to class, I have been working at the pantry for over three years and to be honest all I really knew about in terms of food insecurity was just mainly about food insecurity on the Portland State campus. In terms of food insecurity outside Portland State, I knew very little about-I did not even know much about Food Stamps other than they were a food assistance program for low income families. Going into the class and learning about food insecurity on a bigger scale has really opened up perspectives and to learn that food insecurity is really a severe issue …show more content…
This class has also inspired me to spark ideas to bring into the pantry to perhaps invite a more opening space and as well as providing ways to make it sustainable. Food insecurity is not only pervasive within the Portland State community but as well as nationwide which has made me want to start making people aware of the issue by simply just talking about food insecurity and hunger. Even with doing food runs to the Oregon Food Bank with Vic, we talk about the issues surrounding food insecurity and as well as Vic’s own experience with the issue.
