First off, I would like to thank Wilfrid Laurier University for being considered a possible candidate for this award. I feel very honoured to be deemed as an ambitious individual. Ambitious people often are the ones who become very successful in both their personal and professional lives in addition to changing the world using their ideas, intelligence and perseverance. Even as a child, I wanted to make a difference in the world by improving the lives of others around me. This ideology motivated me to push myself to do better.…
Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…
It was my first day of training. UCSD Medical Center (or whatever the name is). First stop: Emergency Room. As I walked inside I saw doctors and nurses bustling about. To my left a resident was stitching up a bicyclist who had been in an accident.…
My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

Each patient that I met had a different and unique story. They weren’t just patients to me, they were more than that. I wanted to see them grow and heal. This is when I realized that I needed to make the next steps to be a Physical Therapist.…
It was a late night in Spring when I went to visit my pregnant sister. A few moments after being at her house, she mentioned she was not feeling well. As a concerned aunt to be, my immediate response was that we needed to see a doctor. Considering it was 10 PM there was no way we could have gotten to her OB/GYN, therefore we decided to go to the nearest emergency room. We waited and we waited, filled with anxiety, fear and many mixed emotions.…
My desire for becoming a healthcare provider began as a little girl. At a young age, I carried a stethoscope around, patched my dolls with colorful Band-Aids and gave them their shots. I wanted to heal and care for them. As time went by, what seemed like a simple childhood aspiration, evolved into a need and a true desire to care for others. Despite some difficulties in my early college years, I still have the same passion to fulfill my dreams.…
What three things did I really learn in clinical rotations this weekend at Avante? That is a question with a multitude of answers. Having this being my first time in a hands-on, patient experience I gained many insights, tips, tricks, dos and don’ts in just forty-eight hours. I’m beyond glad that I could participate and look forward to adding to these three little snippets of what knowledge I gained. The first thing that really stands out in my mind is that patience truly is a virtue.…
This summer I completed my field experience by shadowing a physician assistant named Adam Strantz. He works in a primary care office in Fremont, Michigan. The office, Spectrum Health Medical Group, was fairly small and included only two PAs and one physician. Before starting my shadowing, I set a few goals for myself to learn during my time there. Each and every one of my goals were met through my time there.…
They all were very cooperative and nice to me and are eager to teach me how things work in their clinic. In this setting PT’s were working with a variety of patients' like young children to adults, and as well as elderly, who is involved in some kind of injuries . This clinic has a big gymnasium which is equipped with plinths, bicycle, therapeutic big ball, weights, therabands, stepper ,treadmill, parallel bars ,ultrasound machines and electric stimulation. Today at Simulation Lab I performed health history on a patient. Firstly, I commenced by preparing myself for the interview. Although I was nervous, as a nurse I had to be confident and prepare myself mentally and kept an open mind to meet the patient. In addition to preparing myself, I prepared the environment, making sure seating and arrangement was in place and the room was comfortable and private. Having done this, I utilized Florence Nightingale’s theory of environmental need.…
I chose to do my job shadowing at a physical therapy office called Northern Therapy and Rehabilitation in Stillwater, OK. While I was there I closely observed the physical therapist and the therapy technicians. They did not let me do much more than watch. While I observed, I tried to ask the therapist important questions about school, her everyday schedule, obstacles she faced, and why she wanted to go into this field. Although I tried my best to get a feel for the occupation and get to know the therapist, she was not very engaging.…
For my assignment, I shadowed the emergency room on a weekend. I shadowed two nurses whom had different patients. As soon as I got there, patients already began to flood in. I wouldn’t say it was hectic, but my nurses definitely kept me busy observing them. The first patient to come in was an older female.…
