PERMA – id Scheme: A Reverse Pyramid Scheme that Actually Benefits the End User The five pillars of positive psychology’s PERMA are: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishments, are each said to have three equitable qualities. These equitable qualities are: thoughts, feelings and behaviors. First, “it contributes to well-being” (Schlechter, Lerner). “It is also defined and measured independently of the other elements,” while just the same, “Many people pursue it for its own sake, not merely to get any of the other elements” (Schlechter, Lerner). These three attributes make for an outstanding model; however, the model stands incomplete without a sense of direction. Take the Cognitive Behavioral Theory model …show more content…
As it stands, the PERMA model makes it seem that each of the pillars cannot influence one another when my personal experience and the passage above show otherwise. Beck notes that the individual will look negatively upon itself if a failure activates such ill-prone thinking . The same thoughts are shown to have an undertone of “dysfunctional beliefs” which seem to be the root of the problem (Beck). So, just the same as the negative case shows poor thoughts to be the root of an issue. Gabbard wrote, “Within A. T. Beck’s formulation, cognitive change depends upon the patient noticing and remembering her own cognition as it occurs. Thus, the patient learns to attend to her own cognitive content as a vehicle for understanding the nature of an emotional episode or disturbance” (Gabbard). To this extent, the revised PERMA model will benefit from the addition of a cognitive transition. This cognitive transition is defined as a vehicle to carry positive recognition of one’s completion or tribute to a PERMA value. Furthermore, this positive recognition radiates to the other PERMA values in attempt to further develop them . Thus, one can view a final revised model below, with cognitive transition labeling the connection points between the five PERMA
