The proportion of people who undertook sufficient physical activity was 34% in the lowest SES group compared with 52% in the highest. Woman and children living in areas of lower SES are more likely to be…
Conclusion This is a well-constructed study, which suggests that the ‘Be Active’ physical activity intervention is a cost effective use of health care finances within a city setting such as Birmingham City. However, it does have limitations, which include the study design (natural experiment), the collection of data using self-reporting, and the length of follow up. Its strengths are that it uses QALYs to measure outcome which means that comparisons can be made with very different types of programmes, and also that it includes a WTP measure. This is a programme whose cost-effectiveness increases over time i.e. the longer it runs the more effective it can be demonstrated to be. Unfortunately, in this current financial climate it is difficult…
Everyday people are failing to realize that physical activity helps to keep a healthy body through weight, bone strength, muscle/joint, and overall mental well-being. As technology increases the public grows lazier with transportation,…

Leeds Let’s Get Active (LLGA) provides the Leeds population with an opportunity to address health inequalities through increasing participation rates in sport and physical activity amongst the least active people in Leeds. LLGA allows Leeds to showcase best practice nationally as well as regionally and contributes significantly to Leeds becoming the most active big city in England. The NHS (2012) state that physical inactivity is a significant health risk as it is found to be outweighed by smoking, causing many more deaths per year. Researchers calculated that if activity levels were increased so that no-one was classed as inactive, then this could reduce early deaths by more than 7%.…

Introduction Childhood obesity is a major health problem in the entire nation with one in four children being overweight or obese. Obesity in early life does not only cause health and social problems in the short term, but can also increase the risk of chronic disease later in life. One of the most affected regions of New South Wales is South Western Sydney including its seven rural and semi-rural areas. To understand why childhood obesity is more prevalent in these areas, we need to have a look at the many influences and risk factors that can contribute to obesity in children and adolescents.…

Obesity is a problem in America. Obesity doesn’t just effect adults, but is now effecting children. The main reasons for childhood obesity are: a sedentary lifestyle and poor food choices. With all the information available about obesity 30 % of American children still remain obese. Research suggests that obesity prevention plans in school are ineffective because by the time a child enters school it is too late and because children learn healthy eating habits and exercise habits primarily from their parents and families.…
With two months of exploring and practicing the Core Intervention Model at Ellwood Elementary School in the city of Goleta, CA, I (Xiaowei Qi, University of California Santa Barbara) participated in three sessions, tutoring kids in kindergarten and students in the second and fifth grade. My supervisors were Amanda Sweigart (the fifth grade), Samantha Farver (the second grade), and Judith Quintero (kindergarten). Regarding the journals about my experience as a tutor, among the three sessions, fifth graders learn independently, quietly, and quickly. Almost all the students in this class worked hard with great participation and fully focused their attentions on the tasks.…

Institution: The model further outlines the importance of preventative methods, which can be made on an institutional level, particularly targeting educational environments. In Australia alone 95% of a children attend either a full day preschool or long day services in the year before attending primary school. Hence, childcare centres must be a key setting to focus upon strategies to improve the physical activity levels and nutritional status of children such as enforcing policy and guidelines.…
The purpose of this scholarly review is to provide educators, coaches, and parents suggested guidelines for improving youth physical education programs through the use of rock climbing as a basis for instituting an Integrative Neuromuscular Training (INT) program. An INT program incorporates general (e.g., fundamental movement skills) and specific (e.g., exercises targeted to motor control deficits) activities integrating resistance and dynamic stability training, core-focused strength development, plyometrics, and agility exercises to enhance muscular fitness and motor skill performance (Myer et al., 2013; Fort et al., 2016, Part II). Ultimately, an effective program develops neurocognitive processing and visual-motor abilities benefiting…

The PDHPE curriculum aims to get children physically active but more importantly it aims to provide children with the knowledge to develop both mental and social health awareness as well as providing the knowledge they need in order to make informed choices about their health. An example of this is evident through the Values and Attitudes outcomesV5: values the important of physical activity to personal…
