P110/120: Energy/Energy & Technology Fall 2015

Homework 05

1. Solar energy can be attractive not only environmentally, but also economically. If an electric clothes dryer has a power rating of 6000 W and is used for 1 hour per day, how much money can be saved in a month by using the "backyard solar clothes dryer" (see Fig. 6.37 in your text), assuming electricity costs 10 cents per kWh?
6000 W x 1hr/day x 30days/month x 1kW/1000 W x $0.10/kWh= $18.00/ month
So $18 a month for electric clothes dryer will be saved because it’s free to use a “backyard solar clothes dryer.”

2. Suppose you have solar radiation of 650 W/m2, and you can collect 20% of the energy that falls on the reflecting surface of a solar cooker. If you need 350 W for the

What is the optimum angle of tilt (from the horizontal) for a solar collector located at 30 N latitude for the purpose of domestic water heating? For space heating?
The angle of tilt would be 30 degrees for both domestic water heating and space heating because the tilt is supposed to be equal to the latitude.

4. What are the disadvantages and advantages of locating solar collectors on a vertical, south-facing wall?
An advantage is that insolation is greater in winter because the sun is lower. The installation would be easy as well. A disadvantage would be in the summer the sun will be higher and need solar collectors to be horizontal.

5. What size flat-panel collector is needed to supply a family's domestic hot water needs in March in Denver, Colorado? Assume 80 gallons per day are needed (1 gal = 8.3 lbs) for the water and that the collector-heat exchanger system has an average efficiency of 40%. Assume a temperature difference of T = between the input water temperature to the soar collector and the output water temperature to be used for showering, washing dishes, etc. The collector tilt angle is equal to the latitude (see Appendix D).
Q= mcDeltaT DeltaT = 70 degrees
80gal x 8.3lbs/gal x 1Btu/lb/degrees x 70 degrees = 53100

While it can be difficult to maintain the water temperature in a tank, it's absolutely necessary that you have one. There are two reasons for this. First of all, if your Betta gets too stressed out over a period of time, his immune system will become compromised, and he'll begin to lose his ability to fight off infection and disease. The second reason is that your Betta is used to living in water that is between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit - and he will become listless and unresponsive if the water is too far above or too far below that temperature.…

Energy independency has now become an international subject, spreading with radical pioneers who seek independence from the local power grid. Henk Rogers reiterates, through his campaign to run his house on solar electricity and amicable quest to ensure Hawaii's electrical independency by 2045, that energy independency is accomplished when an individual or even a community can successfully supply their own energy needs without assistance from the power grid. Through his tenacious aspiration to encourage residents to go off grid, Rogers has inspired countless residents to become energy independent. In doing so, he has prioritized it as his ‘number one’ objective, insistent to reduce carbon emission from combustible fuels. The key factor that lead him to partake of the clean energy movement was perturbing fact that Hawaii’s hallmark coral reefs are perishing in the increasingly acidic ocean.…

With better connections and everything running up well, the solar energy can serve a wide range of appliances, including the machines that run the winery. It will be a great time saver though the installation and maintenance costs need to be incurred. Once everything is done, the only thing to be worried of is the maintenance cost, which is a little bit lower than the cost of paying electricity monthly. Outages are greatly done away with and there should be enough storage units to run the winery for the entire winter or the electricity connected are kept…

Extended along the western coast of South America sits Chile, a country placed between the world’s deepest ocean, the Pacific, and the longest mountain chain, the Andes. This geographic predicament has left Chile vulnerable to devastating earthquakes due to the tectonic instability of the region. In addition to an unstable natural environment, societal and political instability have also plagued Chile’s past including the incident of a violent coup overthrowing the Marxist government in 1973. This resulted in years of rule under a dictatorship until 1989 when democracy was restored (“Chile Facts”). Like many other Latin American countries, Chile has faced plenty of obstacles and continues to deal with problems.…

Solar power is a renewable energy which absorbs the sun's ultraviolet light and converts it into electricity. This method of energy reduces the amount of fossil fuels being emitted in the atmosphere, which also helps reduce people’s carbon footprint. Over time, the energy a person uses will end up saving them money. Rooftop Solar has recently made an appearance in the Nevada community as a solar renewable energy supplier. The strategy Rooftop solar plans to utilize to sell Nevada residents electricity would be by owning the solar panels that they would give them, and then the resident would buy the electricity the panels are…

According to The Washington Post, an American Samoa island produces 99% percent of its energy through the use of solar panels and creates enough energy in 7 hours to power the whole island day and night. The American Samoa island is one example of how clean, renewable energy is beneficial and more useful than the traditional fossil fuel. According to preview data, the American Samoa island has saved about one-hundred-ten-thousand gallons of oil, and reduced carbon emission by two and a half million pounds, which is pretty drastic considering that just one island could make this much difference. The installation of solar panels and other clean, renewable energy sources also create jobs, as more than three-hundred-thousand people work in the rapidly growing renewable energy industry, creating jobs more rapidly and is more competitive than most other industries. Clean, renewable energy should replace traditional fossil fuels for the purpose that it enhances and reverses…

The analysis showed that the amount of money saved (or not saved) by installing a Tesla Solar Roof varied widely depending on factors such as these. For example, one house was built in 1850, in Salisbury, New York (Hope). This house installed 70% solar tiles and 30% non-solar tiles (Hope). It cost the homeowner $38,400 to install the roof and $7,000 to install one powerwall battery (Hope).…

Solar power, simply put, is energy that comes from sunlight. Solar energy is used to power things such as streetlights, homes, or even smaller things such as calculators. Many people have switched to solar energy to power their home’s electrical appliances, as it is commonly believed that solar energy is better for the planet. While solar energy does provide us with energy without burning fossil fuels, there are also other effects on the planet. Before understanding how solar energy impacts the earth, one must understand how solar panels work in the first place.…

Can Alternative Energy Ever Replace Fossil Fuels? Climate change and increasing levels of greenhouse gases have become an ever growing problem in the world today. There are many effects of climate change that have been documented from the latter part of the twentieth century until now. This significant change is due to the introduction of industrialization in society and how it has changed the equilibrium of the atmosphere by drastically increasing levels of CO2, a gas emitted from burning fossil fuels. We depend on fossil fuels for electricity and transportation.…
