About ⅓ of the way to town, he heard a screech owl screech. Billy had heard somewhere that 2 screeches of a screech owl meant bad luck. So he waited to hear a second screech. There was no screech. He kept walking. A little past the screeching he had made it to town. Although he was getting weird stares he didn’t mind. He knew he did seem a bit odd with his dirty overalls and no shoes. You see, Billy only wore shoes when it got cold. He walked through the town and through the school yard. Once Billy got to the train tracks he looked in the office and saw a guy with a hat standing behind the counter. Billy gave the man the ticket and the man smiled. He told Billy to come on back with him. There was a wooden barrel in the back and when the man pulled the lid up, out came two little red hound pups. The man cut two holes in a bag and put the hound pups in it. The hounds found their way to the holes and poked their heads
