Purpose:
To observe different species of living protists in pond water under the microscope. Taking note of their size, movements, and characteristics to classify the different types of protists from applying previous knowledge of protists.

Materials:
The materials in this lab that will be needed are a microscope, slide, coverslips, a pipette, and a dish of pond water.

Procedure:
Prepare a slide by using the pipette to apply two drops of pond water on a slide and properly place a coverslip.
Place the prepared slide under the microscope to view and decide the most suitable objective lens to view the protist under, starting with low power.
Move the slide around to find the protists present in the pond water and if needed, put the slide

The oxytricha lives in freshwater and saltwater, in lakes or streams. Oxytricha have hairlike projections, cilia, that helps them for feeding and movement. The beating of the cilia helps oxytricha by propelling them forward rapidly through the water. From the cilia, oxytricha use them to sweep food particles into its gullet, indicating that they are heterotrophic. The size that oxytricha ranges from are 40 to 240 micrometres. Oxytricha possesses two nuclei, a macronucleus and a micronucleus, the macronucleus containing most of the genes that the cell would use daily and the micronucleus serves at the “back up” copy of the genes. The oxytricha can reproduce both asexually and sexually, by mitosis through binary fission, asexually, and sexually by conjugation. The oxytricha was easily identified as a ciliate from the cilia that surrounded the body that helped it move quickly and smoothly through the water. The body of the oxytricha was filled with spots and contained two outlines of a circle which were the macronucleus and micronucleus. The characteristics of the oxytricha were expected from observation since it is similar to other species of the phylum and other

Purpose and Background Cells divide in two ways, mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is used to produce cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell for growth, asexual reproduction, or repair after injury. Cells that are produced by mitosis are diploid, meaning that they have two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. Meiosis is used to produce haploid cells that have only one set of chromosomes, a mix of chromosomes from both parents. Meiosis produces cells that are genetically unique from their parent cells.…

Ningaloo Reef Marine Ecosystem 1. Identify ten organisms from your chosen ecosystem and draw a food web to show trophic interactions between them. Within this food web, you must include and label a decomposer. Ten organisms that live in the Ningaloo Reef include the bottlenose dolphin, loggerhead turtle, tiger shark, whale shark, Southern Calamari squid, jellyfish, zooplankton, dugong, phytoplankton and seagrass. The decomposer in this food web is bacteria, which works to further break down the dead organic matter in the bodies of plant and animal organisms.…

Information about the Bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa During microbiology lab, an unknown bacteria culture in liquid broth was assigned to be identified by conducting a series of various tests. Nearly twenty different tests were conducted on the bacteria, but the most important of these was Gram staining test, gelatin stab test, and oxidase test. The results of these three tests allowed for the determination of the bacteria genus and species.…

The filose amoeba is a member of the phylum, Cercoza, which is distantly related to organisms bearing relations to primary plastids. Paulinella cells in a lucid shell made of silica scales, moving at the bottom of the fresh water floor. The organisms are unique due to the presence of one-or two blue-green rod shaped chromatophores in the cytoplasm. The chromatophore of Paulinella shares similar characteristics with the cyanobacteria of the genus Synechococcus, such as having a thick peptidoglycan wall, and performance of binary fission similarly. Therefore, the idea of Paulinella chromatophore is thought to be an endosymbiotic cyanobacterium, that relies on survival by staying within the host.…

The life-cycle of N. fowleri is composed of three stages, trophozoite, flagellate, and cyst. There is no particular order for these stages, rather, each stage is entered in response to the amoeba 's environmental conditions. The amoeba will enter the trophozoite stage when environmental conditions are favorable. N. fowleri is a thermophilic organism, meaning it tends to prefer warmer environments (see fig. 1).…

Objective To grow, examine, and describe the growth of biofilm on glass slides placed in plant material, soil, and water. Introduction Biofilms consist of cells that adhere to a surface and each other by forming a slimy layer that suspends and attaches them. This layer is called the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which consists of polysaccharides, DNA and other various hydrophilic polymers. The EPS forms a matrix to which cells attach to so that they are planted in place nearby a nutrient source for growth and division. The biofilm creates a community that is anchored to surfaces and protects it from harmful substances, such as disinfectants.…

In the field of Microbiology, it is essential that the microorganisms being examined are seen clearly and distinctly under the microscope. Most specimen thrive in aqueous environments, therefore they are translucent and when mounted on a microscope the light passes through them making it impossible to see the specimen. Equally as important as this is that the viewer is aware of what type pf bacteria is being utilized. Both of these criteria in a lab are met with the use of a staining procedure which allows for greater contrast between the mostly translucent cells and light used by the microscope. Staining is a critical step when analyzing microorganisms and has great significance in a laboratory or clinical setting.…

Scyphozoa Alcyonacea Hydrozoa (class) (order) (class) Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Platyhelminthes Classification information for Platyhelminthes: Platyhelminthes are known to be the simplest of bilateral animals- in addition to being multi-cellular, heterotrophic, and invertebrates (Myers, 2002). Typically, they can be found in marine water, freshwater, and general damp terrestrial habitats, being free living, but more than often parasitic (Myers, 2002). Additionally, platyhelminths are known to have three germ layers: an endoderm, ectoderm, and a mesoderm. The addition of the mesoderm allows animals to form true organ systems; however, this is all truly possible due to the mesoderm’s key feature, the coelom- a fluid-filled cavity that stores and protects the major organs (Myers, 2002).…

The word algae represent a large group of different organisms from different phylogenetic groups, representing many taxonomic divisions. In general algae can be referred to as plant-like organisms that are usually photosynthetic and aquatic, but do not have true roots, stems, leaves, vascular tissue and have simple reproductive structures.(Christi,Y.2007).…

Microscope also is an optical instrument that keep observe specimen in resolution and magnitude way. However, there are some microbes such as viruses that cannot be observe by certain microscope and this microbes has to be observe using electronic microscope which has more magnification power. In this experiment, light microscope has been used to determine and observe the microbes by using scanning lens (4x), low power lens(10x), high power lens(40x) and immersion-oil lens(100x).…
