Oxford Royale's Use Of The Weather In The Great Gatsby

Writers often use weather to highlight important moods of their novels. Oxford Royale defines this use as a pathetic fallacy; “A literary device in which human emotions are attributed to aspects of nature, such as the weather” (Oxford Royale). Pathetic fallacies are often utilized in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, to help highlight important scenes. Fitzgerald uses the weather to both reflect and emphasize the interactions between Gatsby and the other characters to help the reader further understand the mood of the situation.
In the novel before Gatsby and Daisy reunite at Nick’s house, it is raining. Gatsby is very anxious and he is unable to calm down. The rain can symbolize Gatsby’s inner torment with himself when it comes to him reconnecting with a married Daisy. The rain leaves him frantic and seemingly withdrawn from the real world. He ignores Nick’s comments and paces throughout the house as he waits for Daisy to

On that day, Nick comments “The night had made a sharp difference in the weather and there was an autumn flavor in the air” (Fitzgerald 153). In Autumn, the leaves change color and die, making a parallel to Gatsby’s death. At this time in the novel, Gatsby wishes to go swimming in his pool for one last time even though there was an “Autumn flavor in the air”. He wishes to swim in his pool before it closes for the season despite the chill in the air; hoping to make one last attempt to stop time and restore his relationship with Daisy to the way it was before, since he expects her to call him at least one last time. The “sharp difference in the weather” shows the quick change in Gatsby’s relationship with Daisy. She no longer calls him as often as she used to, and now they have drifted apart. Unfortunately, Daisy never calls Gatsby, and Gatsby is eventually killed by Wilson, falling into his pool like the dying leaves of

My favorite part of the book when Daisy and Jay are reunited again at Nick’s house you see weather play a huge role in this powerful scene. On the day Nick invites Daisy over as a favor for Jay it just so happens to be continuously raining. I think the rain was a symbol of the nervousness and the buildup to seeing Daisy again for Jay. The two are speechless when they first see each other as the drizzling…

Relationships are an integral part of life. The need to belong and the desire to be a part of something has been prevalent for many years. We are autonomous beings with our own conscious, yet our views and decisions are influenced by those we idolize. Even after our companions leave, we take action in their memory. In the novel The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald illustrates the impact of admiring someone through the voice of narrator Nick Carraway.…

Gatsby cannot seem to understand that Daisy has moved on from her life just like the “boats against the current” (180). The weather symbolizes the inability to have time stop and that individuals are constantly being trapped in time just like how Gatsby is trapped in his past memories of Daisy and this reflects Gatsby’s relations with…

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, during the falling action chapters the novel became dark, and the mood of the story contradicted the mood of the previous chapters. The tension that had been brewing between Tom and Gatsby peaked, but it was the environment around them that created this intense atmosphere. Fitzgerald wanted to use these factors to make novel even more dramatic, as a result the weather played an important role in the development of the story again. Other items, such as alcohol, also played a key role in creating greater tension between the characters. The mood was also impacted by the paranoia of Tom and Gatsby, both had different rationale, but both equally impacted the mood of the story via the central conflict,…

Weather creates an atmosphere in a story, making it depressing or happy. In The Great Gatsby, Nick schedules a meeting for Daisy and Gatsby. During this scene, it starts pouring rain, which to me, shows that there is much more drama in store. I interpreted the rain as a sign of their obvious tension. Nick later leaves the two alone so they can reconnect, and by the time he returns, the two are having a great time together.…

“Her voice struggled on through the heat, beating against it, molding in senselessness into forms” (Fitzgerald 154), at this point Nick is confused why Daisy calls him an “absolute rose”. Fitzgerald makes Nick understand that he is never in full control of the story, Daisy is over powering him and everyone else in the novel. In chapter seven when Daisy says this, her emotion is confused and matches the heat of the day. She does not understand her passion that is forming for Gatsby. Nick soon comes to realization that Daisy has a lot of heat forming between her, Tom, and Gatsby.…

In the first passage after Jay Gatsby's death in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses a series of familiar details, vivid descriptions, and eerie language to provide a feeling of tranquility after a tragic event which brings forth a sense of irony and the calm sensation of weightlessness of the water capping the end to Jay Gatsby's life as if his death was peaceful and meaningful. Fitzgerald's use of soft diction gives the final moments leading up to the end of Gatsby's life a sort of soothing tone and his description of the water really eases the tension of his final moments. Fitzgerald's use of vivid, familiar imagery helps the reader understand the feeling of buoyancy Gatsby was feeling as if they were on a…

This season coincides with Gatsby’s prodigal, over-the-top parties, which occur throughout the spring and summer. Summer symbolizes the relationship and the seeming fulfillment of Gatsby’s dream to be reunited with Daisy. The summer ends and transitions to fall, which, as we know, is the season when plants and leaves begin to die, and life seems to come to an end. In chapter 9, a servant informs Gatsby, “‘I’m going to drain the pool today, Mr. Gatsby. Leaves’ll start falling pretty soon’……

Fitzgerald uses weather to foreshadow the outcomes of various scenes. For instance, when Daisy and Gatsby are set to meet again, “The day agreed upon was pouring rain,” (Fitzgerald 81). The gloomy rain suggests that the meeting will not go well. Additionally, Gatsby tells Daisy, “If it wasn’t for the mist we could see your house across the bay,” (Fitzgerald 87). The mist implies that fog is concealing the view of the Buchanans’ residence.…

Weather and season together are used as a metaphor to reflect characters’ inner feelings and set the tone of the crucial point in the development of the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy. The rain and sunshine when Gatsby and Daisy first meet after five years reflect Gatsby’s nervousness at first and set the emotional tone of the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy from embarrassment to comfort in chapter 5. As a very crucial point in the novel, the setting of Gatsby and Daisy’s first meeting after five years of separation starts with a rainy day in early summer. Nick depicts the weather of that day as “the day agreed upon was pouring rain” (Fitzgerald 83).…

Nick mentions, “I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer”, and this proves not only to be Nick’s motto for the summer but also Gatsby’s (4). Gatsby’s motive for the summer is to try to rekindle his relationship with Daisy, and along with that become an accepted member of the Upper Crust, Old Money society. Gatsby’s first step in his plan to try to reconnect with Gatsby is to bring her to Nick’s house and talk to her for the first time in five years. Unfortunately, “The day agreed upon was pouring rain” which symbolizes the rush of emotions that Gatsby is feeling (83). This one day is the first of many defining days for Gatsby.…

In the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses diction, imagery, personification, and in order to portray the deeper meaning of his novel with his style. By using diction, Fitzgerald has structured Gatsby’s storyline as alluring and mysterious.
