The extent to which health and safety legislation applies to volunteers is not always entirely clear, but the following principles are clear and obviously relevant: All individuals and organisations have a duty of care to avoid carelessly causing injury to persons; and employers are obliged by law to fulfil particular duties in order to protect the health and safety of people who come into contact with their organisation and who are affected by their organisation’s work. It is good practice and common sense to treat the volunteers and staff equally in terms of health and safety. If the charity fails to take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of a volunteer, the affected volunteer may have a claim against Oxfam. A health and safety policy;

⦁ A safe place to work;
⦁ A safe system of working (which includes, for example, the provision of training, equipment and supervision for operating machinery or, for example, lifting patients);
⦁ Appropriate and adequate insurance; and
⦁ Suitable first aid equipment.
