Oxfam International is an international non-governmental organization who aids in human rights efforts across the globe. They are composed of 18 organizations who cooperate with partners and local communities in over 90 countries (Oxfam International, n.d.). Oxfam International was formed in 1995 by a group of independent non-governmental organizations who wanted to work together for a greater impact on the international stage to reduce poverty and injustice (Oxfam International, n.d.). On April 16, 2016, an earthquake struck Ecuador in South America; the largest on record. The earthquake killed hundreds of people and injured thousands while severely damaging the infrastructure in the region including access to clean water (Oxfam International, n.d.). Working together with local government, Oxfam coordinated a restoration effort which focused on the sanitation and hygiene needs for those whose homes had been severely damaged or destroyed completely ( Oxfam International, n.d.). At the time of writing this, these events are still ongoing and Oxfam is still actively involved in the restoration effort. One of the biggest challenges facing Oxfam and many other International non-governmental organizations is that funding is primarily donation-based via institutional fundraising and public fundraising. In 2015, an annual financial report from Oxfam International states their excess of income over expenditure at just 35 million euros with a total income of 1,050 million euros (Oxfam International, 2014-2015, p.124).
