A study by Hamer et al. found that the diet of the Barred owl is more varied than the Spotted owl’s. Data collected on the composition of each owl’s diet suggests that though they both primarily hunt in forests, Barred Owls are likely to hunt in surrounding meadows and riparian areas. Although there is significant overlap in their diets and habitat, it is possible for the two owls to co-exist. The key lies in riparian zones, areas along streams and rivers.…

The reasons for the Barn owls decline are not fully understood, but can most likely be attributed to the loss of suitable habitat due to various aspects of agricultural intensification and the increased use of harmful second generation anti-coagulant rodenticides. Other factors that have been implicated in their decline are the loss of suitable nest sites, an expansion of major road networks and the increased severity of winters. The Barn Owl is also in decline while the Corncrake is no longer found in many of the locations once well known for its link to the bird. In response, the Park has helped to fund several local initiatives including a Bird Watch Ireland survey that will monitor the nesting behaviour of Barn Owls as well as a project…

The major themes of The Birds are fear and survival, likewise the themes of warfare. Not to mention people’s surprisingly similar reactions to the birds and warfare. The birds themselves represent a threat post by an unseen force that is impossible to fight against, such as fear, or more tangibly, bombing planes. These similarities combined with the published time of the novelette, as mentioned in the introduction, when authors took inspiration from war are enough to show that The Birds is in fact symbolic of something other than…
