All that day he traveled, laying his course by the roundong sun. the forest seemed interminable; nowhere did he discover a break in it. Peyton Farquhar has escaped being hanged by a Union scout disguised as a soldier. His nuse breaks as his body falls from the bridge and instead of being suspended from the bridge he continues to fall into the stream below. He swims as fast as he ever has to get away. He is being shot at by the soldiers so he dives to avoid the bullets. Eventually he reaches land, he knows exactly where to go to get home to his wife and he runs the whole way there. He is so relieved to be home with his family. Peyton walks up the driveway holding hands with his wife, he swings the front door open bellowing “I’m home!” down the hallway. Two children run from either direction of the house to the front door and into their long-awaited father’s arms. He scoops them up in glee and holds them close, so thankful to be able to be with them again. Peyton begins to choke up as he is filled with joy and he lets out a tear, the children have never seen their father cry, they watch him in awe. His little girl asks “what's wrong dad?” Peyton retorts “nothing, absolutely nothing is wrong.” The daughter looks confused at her father's vague answer but he stands by his word; nothing is wrong and he is so grateful for
