What is Overweight and Obesity

Overweight and Obesity - body weight that is considered unhealthy for a certain height

There are many leading causes in children obesity. The leading factors are genetics and no physical activity. Children are starting to not play outside and do sports. Children are becoming more and more reliant on technology. Video games, phones, tablets, TV, etc. Lack of energy balance is a major cause of being overweight. Lack of energy balance is when the energy that comes IN to your body isn’t equivalent to the energy coming OUT.

To have a healthy weight you don’t have to have the same IN and OUT energy everyday. You have to have the same IN and OUT energy over time. Same IN and OUT energy over time = weight

Your genes also control where your body stores and holds its fat. Families also share food and activity habits. So it is up to the parents to make good and healthy choices for their children.

Health Conditions
There are some health conditions that will cause someone to become overweight or obese. Some people have hormone problems such as underactive thyroid, cushing’s syndrome, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Hypothyroidism is when your thyroid doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone. This causes your metabolism to slow down and makes you gain weight. This will also make you feel weak and tired.
Cushing’s Syndrome causes you to gain upper body weight, have a round face, fat around the neck, and thin arms and legs.
PCOS is a condition that affects 5-10 percent of women of childbearing age. When women have PCOS they are normally obese, have excess hair growth, and have reproductive and other health problems. These are cause by high levels of the hormone called androgens.

The doctor will also calculate the child 's age and their growth patterns. It is common for kids to grow out of their weight, some people call it their baby fat.

How to Help Your Overweight Child

One of the most important ways a parent can help their child is to be supportive. The parent can be supportive by talking to their child and accepting them. A child will often feel the same way their parent does about them. For example if a child’s parents isn’t supportive and accepting of their child then the child will not accept his or hers self and feel bad about themselves.
Parents are not recommended to separate their child from other children because of their weight. Parents should do the opposite. Parents should gradually put them into sports and other physical activities. Parents should also gradually change the whole families eating and physical activity habits. This will help the whole family and teach everyone healthy eating habits and the child doesn’t feel left out or
