Indonesia is a country located in Asia that is home to over 17,000 islands, 6,000 of which are populated. The name, Indonesia, means “land beyond the Indus River.” The name was coined by the British in the 19th century. Indonesia is a rich and racially diverse country, brimming with culture and tradition. The country is also home to the largest population of Muslims in the world, making it a centerpiece in the celebration of Islam traditions. Food prohibition has been practiced for centuries all over the word by people of all ethnicities. The reasons for this practice are varied, and include things like, family customs, tradition, religion, personal beliefs, and cultural taboos. In addition, some of the most prominent and well-known instances of food prohibition in the world today, arise from the Muslims and Jewish community. It is commonly known that many Muslims don’t eat pork and Jews don’t mix milk and meat products while cooking. Food culture and the Islam religion plays an incredibly important part in the development of Indonesian history and has helped shape the country into what it is today. …show more content…
The author, Dr. Vivienne Kruger, was born in New York. Her occupation is being an author and she holds a PhD in history. Her race, ethnicity, and religion are unknown. The book was published in 2014 and was originally written in Bali, Indonesia. The book was created in order to share the food culture and traditions of Bali with others. Balinese Food is a book that evokes the importance of religion and how intimately intertwined religion and food are in Indonesia. Although the book does not focus on Muslims or food prohibition, it does show the importance of religion as a whole when it comes to food culture. Listed throughout the book are dozens of recipes that Dr. Vivienne Kruger gathered during her experience in Bali. Each recipe highlights important aspects of Bali and gives some insight to what the people of Indonesia
