Overthink In La Bamba

Everyone gets anxiety before a talent show, they start to ponder which leads them to the worst. This would be considered as overthinking. Overthinking is when one ponders so much to where they start getting anxiety about the worst that could happen. This could be as if an actor is about to perform an exciting shot in a film. He would overthink in the film, say, if he were choosing to save a certain person. This can often lead to making bad decisions or cause bad things to happen. In the article “La Bamba”, by Gary Soto Manuel overthinks too much during the play, this becomes bad for him. Conflict, rising action and symbols support this idea.
The conflict supports the theme to not overthink. The conflict is when something happened to Manuel making him afraid to mess up. He got too caught up in thinking about the talent show and started jinxing himself. “ In bed he prayed he wouldn’t mess up.” Manuel becomes worried as well because he forgot his math workbook and thinks he won’t be able to make it to the talent show practice. He is relieved when he realizes that he has practice in the afternoon. “When he got to school he realized he had forgotten his math workbook. If the teacher found out, he would have to stay after school and miss practice for the talent show.” Both of these quotes show how Manuel’s conflicts are …show more content…
The rising action of Manuel building up the nerves and breaking down his courage when he comes to school knowing he might miss the play shows he is overthinking. “When he got to school he realized he had forgotten his math workbook. If the teacher found out, he would have to stay after school and miss practice for the talent show.” He then dropped the record on the floor building suspicion for the reading of it being broken or not. “ Manuel dropped the record, which rolled across the cafeteria floor until it hit a wall.” Both of these quotes show the nerves and anxiety of Manuel building
