Overstreet: A Short Story

Decent Essays
So, I turned 38 years old today, man there was a lot of significant events that took place in my life during my 37th year on this earth. I received my Bachelor’s; I left the prison as Cpl. Overstreet, and started my new job as Criminal Justice Instructor Overstreet, but the thing that holds the most value to me during this past year is the last laugh that I got to share with my grandmother (MA). This year is my first birthday and Thanksgiving without her. She may have left this earth, and is walking in heaven with my grandfather (Pa), but I am able to be with her daily with what she left behind in my heart. Today was a very tuff day for the Overstreet family. Thank you, all for all of the birthday wishes that made my day very special to me.

A few blocks north of Foothill Blvd. , Clark Magnet sits close to the hillside and is painted beige and green. The school is clean too, for it has students who pick up their trash before going to class. On one side of the school, the amphitheater slopes up to the Panther Pit, but on the other side is the parking lot lined with cars—BMWs, Hondas, every kind, carrying their drivers and passengers with backpacks for odd and even days; and there are solar panels that arch over the cars. On the PE field the students run slow or fast and some of them scream if a lizard runs among them.…

The amorous enticement of Boulevard 9 continued. Invitation was on the table, everywhere you looked. You just needed to play by the rules; and really, the rules were made up as the night grew long. In the back recesses of this loose community were pole dancers; females with nothing but scanty-clad bikini bottoms, and even a male or two. They were fluid, entrancing, and entertaining, to say the least.…

I spent many hours after school sitting in the sparsely active cafeteria, while she served the students with a smile on her face. My Grandma was a kind, selfless woman who would never let you go hungry. She instilled in me how important it is to take care of the people around you, so that when you are in need, they will take care of you. It’s cliche, I know, but the world truly did lose a great human being. After her passing, My Mimi, who is my father’s grandmother, took me in and supplied me everything I needed to succeed in life.…
