Overpopulation
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, overpopulation is an undesirable condition where the number of existing human population exceeds the carrying capacity of Earth. Nowadays, overpopulation has been a prevailing word, as it has triggered numerous problems in urban areas. To understand this issue thoroughly, it is important to declare the root cause of this matter.
After the technological industrialization, a huge improvement of health care service and medical facilities has been done, which in return reduces our average mortality rate. People tend to live longer than their ancestors have been a century ago. Based on a survey conducted by the World Health Organization, the average life expectancy of American in 1990 jumped from 75 to 79 in 2013; it is expected that in 2025, the possibility of being 85 years old is not unachievable any more. With prolonged lifetime, the consumption of human resources are likely to soar. Once scarce resources encounter unlimited enquiries, it would lead to shortage or skyrocketing prices. Take the example of housing, as stated in the South China Morning Post of 22 January, 2014’s news, the title “Hong Kong ranks world 's No 1 for 'most unaffordable '”, a survey of 360 cities by US-based consultancy Demographia reported that Hong Kong 's median home price was more than HK$4.02 million, while the annual median household income of HK$270,000 was nearly one-15th of the home price (Yvonne Liu, 2014), denoting the fact that high…
