Overnight Conventions

Dear Members of the Junior Statesmen Foundation Board, It has come to my attention that this year, overnight conventions are seeing a severe increase in the cost to attend. This deeply disturbs me both as an Expansion Agent for the Northeast State Cabinet and a member of the Junior State of America. These rising prices make it difficult for many students to attend, including myself. Furthermore, they come as quite a shock to chapters I am attempting to expand to, making expansion efforts much more difficult than in the past. Expansion is known to be one of the most difficult jobs on regional cabinets. As an Expansion Agent, I have heard every excuse in the universe, and starting new chapters is already a very difficult task. The rise in the price of overnight conventions makes this nearly impossible. Overnight conventions are arguably the best experience a JSA member can have, and bringing new chapters to these is a vital part of the expansion process. They show new JSA members what JSA is truly about, and make chapters more eager to participate in JSA activities. Also, seeing how many other great chapters are out there, pushes them to do better. Overnight conventions are a crucial part of JSA, but nobody will be able to attend at the prices they are being set at. …show more content…
Also, the rise in prices is particularly discouraging for chapters with lower income from attending. This is unfair, as the point of JSA is to get students active and involved in government, regardless of economic background. The steep increase in prices destroys the whole purpose of JSA, and it is simply wrong to impose such high fees on chapters that barely have their feet off the ground. I implore you to make the right decision, because otherwise the future of JSA does not look very

We have used these funds to support less fortunate families as we have our annual “B2B Canned Good Auction”. During this event canned goods are collected for donating to the Lamar County DFACS Office. In addition to community support we have also used our club funds to develop a faculty centered support system. We have displayed this with our “B2B Legacy Ball” where faculty members were honored for their involvement.…

If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

This report requested by Michele Bartosek pertains to the Alpha Kappa Psi Career Fair, hosted at Central Michigan University (CMU). While attending my first CMU career fair, I was not actively seeking an internship, but rather gaining experience and building my network. When I walked into Finch Fieldhouse, I did not expect there to be 143 tables worth of future employers, all squeezed into one gym. Although the Alpha Kappa Psi career fair was extremely overwhelming and stressful, it was beneficial to go as a freshman to understand what I can improve on at the next career fair. I understand the importance of many potential employers attending this event at this venue to maximize the opportunity for the students, however having so many people…

THON canning is more than simply about getting to get together with friends over a weekend in the fall, it is about raising money to support the search for a cure for pediatric cancer, and support the Four Diamonds Foundation in its mission to aid children impacted by the disease. The following paper discusses why the decision to cancel canning events indefinitely at the Pennsylvania State University, while supported with valid arguments, is not the best option for the Penn State/THON community. The overall purpose of the piece is to stimulate conversation on how canning may continue in the future as a THON tradition, instead of being abolished altogether. This is a relevant issue in that the “last” canning weekend ever was a few weeks ago, and while many first-year students enjoyed their first exposure to the event, many THON veterans were lamenting the fact that it was the last time students at the university would have this unique opportunity.…

Executive Summary Female students at Rutgers University often are neglected when looking for an open community of women to reach out or relate to. All women face problems such as the gender pay gap, student loans, reproductive rights, violence against women, LGBTQ rights, and women in leadership. These hardships are often looked over or silenced among society. Some assume, for example, that the pay gap exists because women choose to have lower-paying jobs.…

Come spring of senior year and many seniors are faced with a tough decision whether they should attend community college or a four year university. When choosing between colleges people should be looking at the colleges that suit them academically, personally, and financially. According to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, with more than 2.1 million students on 113 campuses, the California Community College is the largest system of higher education and it’s growing more and more each year. Although community colleges and four year universities may share the same purpose, community college appears to be much more affordable, the classes are smaller, and it’s very flexible with a student’s schedule. College tuition is getting increasingly expensive each year which is why many students choose to attend…
