Overcrowding in Public Schools: The Problem Needs to be Fixed in a Timelier Manner In the United States of America, there is an overcrowding problem in our schools, the school systems need to give this issue more attention before things get much worse. Overcrowding occurs when the number of students enrolled in the school is larger than the number of students the school is designed to accommodate (“Condition of Americas Public School System”). Although the school systems have taken some actions to fix this growing problem, the number of trailers and the amount of time wasted is not helping this issue. The growing number of students in schools that are at overcapacity cause the school to be worn down more quickly.

This photo was taken from WBTV and features Myers Park High School, which is in the CMS school district. As you can see their lunchroom is very crowded and they are running out of room for more students. It is so crowded that by the time some students get through the lunch line and eat a few bites it is time to go back to class. CMS has put up multiple trailers at this school to help with the classrooms not being overcrowded, but nothing has been done about how cramped the lunchroom, electives, and gymnasium are. Myers Park HS currently has 30 mobile classrooms (Russell). This issue needs to be fixed in a timely manner before more damage is done. Trailers are only making schools more cramped and making parents enraged that some students get to learn in a safe building while other students are forced to learn in a trailer that isn’t as …show more content…

The district’s demographer, Population and Survey Analysts, has projected approximately 17,000 new housing units will be constructed in LCISD between 2016 and 2020. LCISD’s master plan calls for elementary schools to have capacity for 750 students and high schools to have space for 2,000 students (Leonard). As you can see this school plans to ease their overcrowding issue by opening new campuses, they are preparing in advance for more students to come which is a smart solution to their overcrowding issue. School leaders, it is time to make a difference and open these new schools to ease overcrowding and make learning easier and more enjoyable by reducing classroom sizes. Chicago has been dealing with overcrowding as well. Dowell did say the school is desperately needed to ease overcrowding. CPS said the school has 868 students in a building meant for 690 (Spielman and Fitzpatrick). Adding a new school would help ease the overcrowding problem in Chicago and for many other states as

During breakfast, most students enter the building through an exterior cafeteria door, while the remaining students (about 50-75) enter the school through the front doors and proceed directly to the cafeteria. The mornings provide for a more fluid and peaceful setting as students come in and find a seat and are quiet followed by throwing all of their trash away. Lunch is more crowded and serves 325 students in each lunch period therefore creating a logistical nightmare. There are two lunch periods (11:15 a.m.-noon, and noon-12:45 p.m.).…

Through the years of 1988 to 1990, Kozol went to cities like East St Louis, the Bronx, Chicago, Harlem, Jersey City, and San Antonio. He went to 30 different neighborhoods to visit schools.
