Overcoming The Hardships Setting goals for the future that are interrupted by family hardships can be extremely difficult to achieve; but once you figure out how to overcome the difficulties, life will be a smooth road to success. Being raised in a home with no father figure made my journey to succeed much harder than expected. Also, having a mother who only cared about herself and not about her three children did not help any either. From abusive parenting to having to rely on my older brother and sister to take care of me is how I spent the first 13 years of my life. After I turned 13 things started going well for the first time. The journey sure was not over, but I was that much closer to being where I wanted to be. How I overcame the hard times of my childhood I will never know; but what I do know is that I persevered and finally ended up at my purpose in life. The first of many problems started with my mother from the time I was born. My mother and her parents did not have a stable relationship, so very seldom did I get to see my grandparents. I virtually had no contact with family outside of my mother and my siblings. She had so many different boyfriends throughout my childhood that we moved houses four different times, one including a different …show more content…
Freshman and sophomore year were easy and fun, but junior year was a different story. I had never studied so I was extremely unprepared for my junior year. It was the year with the most work, not so much difficult work, but there was always an assignment due. With the help of the Boomers I made it through with a good GPA. My senior year was chaos because of all the college prep and graduation. It was stressful, but again the Boomers came into help and made things a lot easier for me. They helped me cope with the loss of my best friend and they motivated me to follow my dreams and prepare myself for the future instead of worrying about the

I interviewed my grandfather Charles Rutherford who lives down the road from me. We discussed a few different topics such as what his life was like being a kid, what he thought of school, and how he knew my grandmother was the one for him. It sometimes got off tracks talking about his children and what happened to them, but for most of the time we stayed on topic. We talked a lot about what life was like and his jobs and his life overall. This interview started about his life in Tennessee and it wasn't easy for him back then, he had to walk miles to school and his dad wasn't around very often.…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

Growing up as the middle child in a lower income family was, at best, difficult. Abusive parents, rampant drug use, and less than caring family members left me in a precarious position as a child. Was this how every family interacted? Is this what I was to become? Growing up I was always told that I would never amount to anything and given little chance to succeed.…

I can be biased in my own stories and conclude that I have made it through the toughest times anyone could ever experience, but I know that’s far from true. I feel fortunate enough to say that I have not been through the worst, yet the experiences I have encountered over time with overcoming adversity has immensely impacted who I am and how I view the world. Just this fall of my junior year, I made a verbal commitment to play hockey for the Colgate University Raiders. To me, this is one of my greatest achievements in life, not just because it was my top school for D1 hockey, but because of the journey along the way that taught me to keep hope, an open mind, and an open heart. My sophomore year, I didn’t know a thing about Colgate; in fact,…
