Suzanne Laverick Harrington’s article “Our own stories- One teacher’s writing journey: Hey I’ve been there,” from The Reading Teacher (1998) explains that writer’s block, can be fixed if teachers were able to boost the confidence of their students. Harrington first backs her assertion with ways to prevent writer’s block with an antidote that works for her; second, with an explanation of her own struggles as an obsessed writer; and lastly, through her experience working with students who are “paralyzed with fear” in a classroom. Her purpose of writing this article is to inform rookie writers to not fear this so called disease as a way of giving up on the one thing they love. Even though Harrington writes this article to writers, her way of writing and her eye catching title attracts young college students who are struggling with their writings who crave help for their ideas to flow into their own work.…

For the past four months, I have been participating in Professor Beadle’s English 115 class in hopes of improving my writing skills throughout the multiple essays and assignments that have been given to us. Looking forward to reach this personal goal of mine, I took the time to focus on each essay individually and seek out the resources that would help me earn a good grade. Over the semester, the course revolved around the topic of monsters which was used throughout three projects: Project Space, Project Text, and Project Media. Each of these assignments challenged my writing capabilities in different ways which ultimately lead to me to better my grammar, analysis, and confidence for future essays. With English being my first language,…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Amongst students, reading and writing are often considered more daunting tasks compared to speaking and listening. Although some have made the argument that writing in an educational setting is easier because it allows students to share their understanding in a private way the process of writing is considered strictly academic to some. Those who were lacking in writing skills, me included, can relate to the frustration of constructing an introduction paragraph, thesis statement, and so on. A majority of the time I spent writing my high school essays were actually spent erasing and rewriting sentences on subjects that I understood, but could never explain in an articulate manner. For that reason, how writing is handled in the classroom has been a main concern of mine since the beginning of this course.…

In writing classes the most common first day question is whether or not spelling and grammar will count. Most commonly students focus more on how they are writing and if it is grammatically correct or not rather than writing their inner thoughts. Jack Connor in his essay, “Will Spelling Count?”, argues that writing requires meticulous efforts through his use of cause and effect, comparison and contrast, and division and classification. Connor displays cause and effect throughout his essay to show how different ways of teaching affect students performance and effort level. When Connor first began teaching he wanted to be a different type of teacher.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
