In The Hobbit there are many instances in which intellect has overcome physical strength. Like when bilbo is traveling through the lands. Also when bilbo and the dwarves see a light in the distance. Brain has been used in all these instances. I have come to believe that in this book brain wins over brawn.
The first account of evidence is when Bilbo and the dwarves are making their way through the lands. As they are getting ready to make camp one of their horses gets scared by something and runs into the nearby river. They were able to get the horse out of the water however the supplies that the horse was carrying were ripped away by the force of the water. It took a smart person ration what supplies they had left. Which was not a lot.
