Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. Civil war broke out, devastating hundreds upon thousands of lives, including several of my family members. Corruption infected the government, military, and all forms of law enforcement.…

I would definitely describe myself as someone who is always willing to try new things, including eating strange types of food, chewing on a “tongue numbing” plant at the Arboretum, and licking the bottom of daddy longlegs to see if it tastes like peppermint. Signing up for Orion was opening up the door to a new challenge that I have never experienced before. I have never gone hiking, let alone backpacking, nevertheless I gave the experience my all and what I got back from it was exponential. When faxing those final forms for this trip, I did not realize the amount of teamwork that would go into this experience.…

Early in my life, I chose to get a grasp on the careers I wanted to pursue, so when the time came I was ready. Clearly, I had been conquering the time before the instance even came into play. I became a college student after just two years in high school and undoubtedly, that has been the best decision I have ever made. I have placed myself in many situations where I thought, “this is the end, and it is never going to work” and I surprised myself every single time. Obstacles always seemed quite impossible, not because the task, at hand, was lengthy but rather because I am a person.…

American Jazz legend Duke Ellington once said, “A problem is a chance for you to do your best”. What he means by this is that if you have a situation that is difficult for you, you should try your hardest to solve it. I agree with this quote because I believe that you should try your hardest anytime, especially when you have a difficult situation because that is when it counts the most. For example, when you know a big test is coming up, and you do not know if you are going to pass it or not you should study for it every night even if you do not like studying, you should do your best in the hardest situation.…

Challenges are just obstacles in our way waiting to be overcome by any man or woman daring enough to accomplish it. One can be influenced by things that have made a major impact in one’s life, showing life isn’t easy and teaching you life lessons. Bankruptcy and shortage of money are common aspects of marriage usually leading to stress and emotional pain. Going broke can lead you to take a different path, which can cause you to handle money better. The amount of regret you feel when you’re stuck eating food from the trash and sleeping on a park bench can convince any person to think twice about his/her decisions in the path.…

Though overcoming adversity causes stress, it is beneficial because it creates a stronger individual. In the video, “Famous Failures,” it said Thomas Edison’s teachers told him he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He overcame adversity to invent the light bulb. Another example from the video was Walt Disney, who was fired from a news for lacking imagination and having no ideas. Equally important, Albert Einstein could not speak until he was four years old.…

As a 16 years old girl, I’ve overcome many experiences, realizations and obstacles that made me who I am today. I think most of us have to overcome some difficulties to make us more confident and to learn more about ourselves. As Eckhart Tolle says “You find peace not by rearranging the circumstances of your life, but by realizing who you are at the deepest level”. When I was 5 years old, I wanted to become a Flight Attendant because they work and travel everywhere at the same time but then I realized I don’t want to be away from my family, that’s when I started to learn the importance of family. But when I got 8 years old, my perspectives changed because of family issues.…

A obstacle I had to overcome was living in the Apartments. Before we got our house we used to live in a Apartment, which was something I disliked. First of all we lived in a apartment that wasn’t in really good conditions. The apartment had cockroaches which was a very common bug that we would find in there. Sometimes we would try to clean and buy something to kill the cockroaches but it was useless because they would keep coming from other apartments where our neighbors didn’t clean.…

Coming face to face with a challenge in life is inevitable, but sometimes to overcome that particular challenge, one cannot let the situation be greater than they are. There are always steps to obtaining your goal. These steps may vary depending on the person setting them, or the situational setting they are in. I find this method the best way to overcoming a challenging task because I am able to lay out step by step how I want to accomplish the task. Success is a complex word. It’s meanings are ambiguous, meaning one thing to an individual and meaning something else to another. A quote by Booker T. Washington provides a satisfying generalization of the word. For example, a man whose enormous wealth consists of money wholly inherited from his father is not considered successful but a man who has worked hard, dug himself out of poverty and now lives a humble life is considered successful. The man in the first example has lived a life full of luxury and has faced close to no obstacles but the second man, even though not as prominent as the first man, has lived a successful life because he had to face many obstacles to reach the point he is at now.…
