Overcoming Obstacles That Has Affected My Life

Decent Essays
One obstacle that has affected my life and made me the person I am right now is racial or ethnic discrimination. This social issue has always been the barrier that kept me from doing what I love and being motivated to do more and live a life where I can feel accepted. Ever since I was born, I have lived in different countries and experienced racial discrimination in so many different forms. I never felt accepted and belong. Unfortunately, such a basic human need was taken away from me simply because of external circumstances over which I have no control. I have been discriminated against or in other words rejected because of skin color, family roots, religious beliefs, way of dressing, way of talking, and so much more. One time in high school

Sometimes, they don’t know the reason why they get discriminated, but people shouldn’t get discriminated at all. People feel like they get discriminated by their appearance. For example, when I was in nursing school in Virginia, I felt like I was discriminated just because the way I look or just being different or maybe because I was Asian, but I don’t know the exact reason why nobody wanted to talk to me.…

Being a young man in a stereotypical society made me come to a realization at a very young age. I learned right from the start of my childhood that the color of my skin would cause problems, and displeasure to some people and that is depending on who I encountered, I would face very different attitudes. I learned that many opportunities would probably close their doors when I approached them and that many people were going to try to make me doubt my capabilities. Yet, it is this mistreatment and discrimination of many minorities that has led me to challenge today’s society..…

Out of all the different occasions that I have experienced discrimination the one time that had the biggest impact on me was when my significant other got ill. I will never forget the day we walked into Tacoma General hospital. He had been experiencing some abdominal pain, when we arrived to the hospital his pain had subsided. We checked in and we could tell that it was a very busy night at the emergency room, the nurse called him back and obtained his history and vital signs which were all unremarkable at that time. We then went to the waiting area and within an hour he began to have sharp pain in his abdomen, I knew something was wrong because he would never complain even when he was in pain because he did not want us to worry, but his pain was becoming so severe that he could not hide it any longer.…
