Improved Essays
Every individual has obstacles in their life, but those who do not allow those obstacles to impede their dreams have perseverance. One who overcomes obstacles in their life will always have a sense of accomplishment and pride whenever they reminisce on those particular moments in their life. I have experienced firsthand overcoming obstacles in life when I joined the football program my high school offered. I joined my high school’s football team after the summer conditioning in 2013 had been completed so I was treated like an insignificant “no body”. I had experience in the sport however I was never given a chance to prove myself. Throughout the football season of 2013 I was given very petty task of little importance. Individuals who were returning were almost inevitability promised their former positions. I worked vigorously every day from 6:30am to 10am during the winter break we had. I ran and lifted weights in order to become better in every way. When school was back in session I had offseason football as my 6th period class and I had to bench press 205 pounds; I failed I was not even in the ball park of being able to bench press that much weight. Throughout the semester those interested in joining the football program had to train every day from 2:50pm to …show more content…
The player from the previous year who harassed me also returned and was attempting to play the identical position as me. I had worked extremely hard for 8 months while he did not partake in the training I had. Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Being born to two immigrants, who have never completed college, and growing up in a low-income family of six individuals, I have faced nothing but a myriad of obstacles in my life. I can be biased in my own stories and conclude that I have made it through the toughest times anyone could ever experience, but I know that’s far from true. I feel fortunate enough to say that I have not been through the worst, yet the experiences I have encountered over time with overcoming adversity has immensely impacted who I am and how I view the world. Just this fall of my junior year, I made a verbal commitment to play hockey for the Colgate University Raiders. To me, this is one of my greatest achievements in life, not just because it was my top school for D1 hockey, but because of the journey along the way that taught me to keep hope, an open mind, and an open heart. My sophomore year, I didn’t know a thing about Colgate; in fact,…
