I told her I could not read. She was silent for a minute. I thought she was going to say forget it. Instead, she told me not to let that stop me. I felt hope for the first time. The next several months she gave me books to read at home and read with me after class. By the end of seventh grade, I not only could read, but I made the honors list. There was no turning back.
The experience of learning to read late in life significantly shaped who I am today. I refuse to allow barriers to dictate my future. I work through major challenges and turn obstacles into opportunities. I have the confidence to be an active member of my community and serve as an advocate for others. I have demonstrated these abilities through high school where all four years I have maintained honor roll while taking advanced classes, whenever available. I also helped to create school events that was inclusive of the ethnic communities that surrounded it. Today, I continue this level of involvement and commitment to my education.
My academic journey started out rough, but that early challenge helped me to build the strength and motivation needed to achieve my academic goals. Today I am prepared to make the most of my educational journey no matter the
