Overcoming Obstacles In High School

Improved Essays
Most people who know me today would never believe I was illiterate through most of middle school. Through high school I was an honor student and part of school leadership. After high school I continue to be an active member of my community and highly involved at school. But, just six years ago, I was a girl standing in front of the class pretending she could read. During that time, my initial goal in school was to survive the day without exposing my secret. I pretended to read by timing when I needed to turn the page. I dodged reading out loud by escaping to the bathroom.

Although I could not read, I had a natural curiosity for learning. I joined clubs, volunteered for special projects, and asked for extra class work. But, I never asked for

I told her I could not read. She was silent for a minute. I thought she was going to say forget it. Instead, she told me not to let that stop me. I felt hope for the first time. The next several months she gave me books to read at home and read with me after class. By the end of seventh grade, I not only could read, but I made the honors list. There was no turning back.

The experience of learning to read late in life significantly shaped who I am today. I refuse to allow barriers to dictate my future. I work through major challenges and turn obstacles into opportunities. I have the confidence to be an active member of my community and serve as an advocate for others. I have demonstrated these abilities through high school where all four years I have maintained honor roll while taking advanced classes, whenever available. I also helped to create school events that was inclusive of the ethnic communities that surrounded it. Today, I continue this level of involvement and commitment to my education.

My academic journey started out rough, but that early challenge helped me to build the strength and motivation needed to achieve my academic goals. Today I am prepared to make the most of my educational journey no matter the

I became literate at a very young age around one or two years old and people could understand what I wanted. For example, bolitas (meant balls in Spanish) cooked beans and no bolitas was refried beans. I had a way of commutating with my family but sometimes I would forget what the word was and I used to describe the item itself. They would eventually understand what I mean. Unlike one of the cases in Deborah Brandt’s Sponsors of Literacy, I did not have a tutor or anything like that.…

Have you ever felt frustrated with yourself because you feel like you do not fit in with the people who surround you? As a child I felt like an outsider from both my friends and family. I always felt different than my peers. I was jealous of the Spanish skills my cousins had just like Malcom X envied Bimbi in, “Homemade Education” for Bimbi’s stock of knowledge.…

More importantly, we learn how to grab and hold onto many things; the illusions that we aim to achieve, called dreams. The drive to push and better yourself to grasp onto unexpected possibilities, we call opportunities. The belief and confidence that you hold within you, we call faith. The Path to a Higher Education “Without education, you are not going anywhere in this world” (Malcolm X). In both Frederick Douglass’ article “Learning to Read” and in Malcolm X’s article “A Homemade Education” they discuss the challenges and obstacles that they had to overcome. Frederick Douglass was a man that was born in the horrors of slavery and later became a famous abolitionist speaker in the north. Malcolm X may not have been a man born into slavery, but he was still treated poorly because of his race. X later became a well-known leader during the Civil Rights Movement.…

Starting from fourth grade leading on to eleventh grade now. When I first started off as a reader, I struggled very much, I was not a very fluent reader, I could not read out loud, and I stuttered very much. My parents and my teacher recommended a class, that would help with the problems I had with reading. Starting in the fourth grade, I would go to a class for an hour that would help with my speech and of course the problems I had with reading.…

The star of LocoCycle is I.R.I.S, a sentient motorcycle that looks like it is from the Knight Rider era of television shows. IRIS is supposed to serve as a tool for an unscrupulous defense contractor, but after being struck by lightning she decides to attend a freedom rally in Scottsburg, Indiana instead. Pablo, her unfortunate mechanic, gets his pants caught in her chassis so he is unwillingly dragged along for the ride. LocoCycle is clearly inspired by cheesy B movies so don't expect the plot to make too much sense. Trying to figure out how a human being can survive being used as a melee weapon by a motorcycle with martial arts abilities will just lead to a headache.…

Education has always been a part of my life. Long before my first day of kindergarten, my family’s love of learning has heavily influenced me. My maternal grandfather told me stories of people in places long ago with the same excitement and joy when I was five as he did when I was fifteen. I savor every moment I spend in my Uncle’s living room, their cozy furniture and reading lamps a mere practicality, while the books lining every shelf stole the spotlight. At nearly every stage in my elementary schooling, my mom inspired me to persevere and fought alongside me.…

Ethan had been dyslexic since he was a child and by helping me learn to read he was able to boost his confidence and ability to read as well. He showed me tha reading was fun and imaginative; that it could take early readers places and to see new things without having ever been there. His enthusiasm for reading is one of the reasons it became one of my favorite activities and I never wanted to put my books away.…

My Road to Reading and Writing As Mark Twain said, “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read”. Many people today don’t take up reading or writing as a hobby. A lot of people would not even read a book for entertainment or to expand their knowledge and the most they write is a post on social media. In my opinion, most people know how to read but chose not to because they are uninterested or unwilling which causes them no to be as proficient in writing.…

My Path to Literacy For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
