Overcoming Obstacles In High School Early College

“It’s important that we understand the obstacles that we face and not run from them; it’s vital that we learn to transmute them into fuel to feed our fire”. Many times throughout my life, I have faced obstacles that could have easily been avoided via ignorance, procrastination, or submission. In my early life, I have done a combination of these action to flee from uncomfortable situations or commitments that require sacrifice. Since the beginning of high school, I have challenged myself to use the tension from stressful situations as motivation to improve myself.
Initially, Bard High School Early College’s Academics were surprisingly overwhelming. A student was required to have at least a 2.0 GPA by sophomore year to participate in College Courses. In freshmen year, my grade point average was a subpar 2.57, a mundane C average. Learning from my prior year, I started attending the office hours of teachers in my weakest subject for a maximum of 30 minutes. I also began

After class, I would stay and discuss more efficient study methods, potential upcoming exam topics, or specific assignment guidelines until I was confident in my abilities. My progressive efforts ensued in a successful spring semester in some challenging courses such as philosophy, accounting, and biology. In the moment, I was pleased but it was quickly supplanted by a hollow feeling. When I returned back home for summer break, I joined the project Urban Suburban Environment Pedal Farmers Internship. Throughout this six week program, I was exposed to many new things such as the farmer’s market, herbalism, healthy recipes, bike maintenance, gardening and food preparation. Most importantly, this internship taught me that I loved learning about food and nutrition. I realized then that I wanted to become a registered dietitian to help people realize an optimal lifestyle especially the residents of
