Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Being born to two immigrants, who have never completed college, and growing up in a low-income family of six individuals, I have faced nothing but a myriad of obstacles in my life. One of the biggest personal challenges I faced was before I moved back to Lawrence I lived in a rural small town on the frontier of Kansas and Oklahoma. I was in Junior high school at the time and the town was very traditional and old-fashioned and having a new student at the time was very seldom to occur. In my life, I have been blessed to be healthy, loved, and cared for. I do not consider myself to be in a position to say I have overcome adversity when there are many people that truly have. Nevertheless, I have overcome myself and realized who I am. Yet, I felt ashamed of my Hispanic culture, mostly because people never considered me as Puerto Rican by my physical appearance.…

Community colleges have changed dramatically over the past decade. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC, 2012) defined this change and called for “community college leaders to breathe life into the vision outlined by the Commission, in which students’ educational experiences are redesigned, institutional roles are reinvented, and the system itself has been reset to meet the needs of students, their communities, and the nation.” (p. vi).
