Since was an elementary pupil I have always been exceptional in my math classes, until this year. Currently, I am enrolled in an AP Calculus class and I find it arduous for me to grasp most of the taught material. At times I find myself debating dropping the class because of the difficulty. Other times I disregard homework and study time for that particular class because I become frustrated when I fail to understand something. Nevertheless, this class is essential to complete because it will award me with much needed math credits for an Associate's degree. In order to overcome my shortcomings in the class I must change my attitude

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

Math has always come fairly easily to me, starting when I took Algebra 1 as a seventh grader. I’ve excelled many years, even going into my school’s math and science program where the students are given honors math and science classes from ninth grade through twelfth grade. I’ve always been a step ahead in math so that is how I was able to enroll in calculus last year. Everyone else in my class was going to take BC Calculus so I thought I should too, I could handle it if they could.…

It was February 2015, my class test for AP Calculus. I was struggling with my 2nd problem (out of 6) and half of my time had passed by. Looking at the next question, I groaned. I couldn’t remember how to compute the 2nd derivative of a function. That was when I realized how much I was struggling with the free response sections of the AP Calculus test, I took it into my own hands to study so I can achieve a 5.My teacher had told me that a 4 was sufficient but I aspired to achieve a 5 because that was my goal.…

I always have followed the saying “if you work hard in life now you will not have to work as hard later.” This saying applies not only to how I work during school now, but how I participate in activities outside of school. To excel in what you want to achieve in life, I believe you need to put in the best effort and try your best in whatever you do. Living by this idea has helped me become a leader in the things I do. It has helped me put others at the same standard as myself and it helps me show my character.…

Throughout my years I have faced challenges like riding a bike, walking on my own two feet, or driving a car, but nothing like taking your first AP classes in the senior year. Throughout high school, I kept it out of the way that I would ever take honors or AP classes, but here I am now taking my first AP classes. I failed calculus 2 the first time I took it. I heard for years from classmates and friends that calculus 2 was one of if not the hardest course offered at the school. A math major friend even tutored me the semester before, and I thought I was prepared. My GPA fell and put me on probation and my subsequent appeal was declined in some sort of triple whammy.…
