When genetic disorders are discussed, both in popular culture and in medicine, they are viewed as negative ways, and for obvious reasons: many genetic disorders, like the one Sierra has, can easily kill or seriously inhibit a person from living a “normal life.” Throughout recent medical history, there has been a lot of focus on learning new ways to control or treat certain genetic conditions. In fact, the entire discussion of how to treat genetic disorders can be brought back to our class discussion of the legacy of eugenics. With this project, I wanted to depict two specific things: I wanted to analyse how Sierra’s life plays into the idea of leading a “normal life.” In addition to that, I wanted to examine how new ways of treatment are replacing old ideas of eugenics, and whether eugenics plays into Sierra’s experience in any way.…

Personal statement The year 2004 marked a time in my family’s history in which we took a substantial step forward by coming to the United States. Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. Civil war broke out, devastating hundreds upon thousands of lives, including several of my family members. Corruption infected the government, military, and all forms of law enforcement.…

The biggest struggle I’ve had to overcome is a personal one. No, I did not have to raise myself out of poverty or stand up to any injustice being committed but for me at least it was a struggle. When I was little I had a terrible stutter/speech impediment or whatever you want to call it. Think of the guy from The Kings Speech but less Royal and without an academy award. I would speak too fast, with a stream of partial words and syllables pouring out of my mouth occasionally tripping up and stopping and stuttering mid-sentence.…

What if doctors could use your own body to cure your own disorders? Genetic therapy and engineering is now only starting to be experimented with, and is popularly portrayed as science fiction with medical ethic issues. But in reality genetic therapy and engineering is the forefront of medicine because not only can genetics help cure pre-existing conditions, but also genetic engineering in utero can eliminate disorders such as Down syndrome and cystic fibrosis. I would love to explore the field of genetic therapy and engineering to help cure people with pre-existing genetic disorders and also to better the future by preventing parents and children from having to go through the struggles of living with disorders, that with the assistance of genetic therapy, can be preventable. Genetic therapy and engineering use genes from the patient to rehabilitate the body from disorders like sickle cell anemia.…
