A last way you can find this in both books is first person. In Rise Above on page one hundred thirty it states,“At times when I cannot stop thinking about all that’s going on, you know what I do? I make my mind think about God instead.” Readers should be able to see that the character's motivation is being used in order to show her overcoming challenges. God gets Bethany to stop worrying about everything bad going on in her life and just focus on the positivity Bethany has in her life. Her faith helps her overcome challenges and fears, meanwhile most people would not bring God into their life to help them with their problems. In Soul Surfer on page one hundred eighty one the author says, “My first tries didn’t work. Then it happened. I surfed with one arm.” Here, by showing the resolution, people should be able to figure out that the author aims to show the protagonist overcame a challenge. Bethany was able to conquer her fear of getting attacked in the water again. She got on the surfboard and as a result was able to surf with one arm. Bethany choose to never give up throughout her journey even when times were rough. Unlike many people that would be horrified and could never get in the ocean again. All these reasons can cause you to conclude Bethany Hamilton’s books show the theme of overcoming challenges through first person
