There are many challenges that you will face over the course of your life. If you choose to back down from your challenges instead of overcoming them, it can impact your entire life. Both the play The Phantom Tollbooth dramatized by, Susan Nanus and the Poem “The Seeker” by, J. Patrick Lewis are about overcoming challenges. The theme that is shared by these two pieces of literature is we must learn to overcome hardship with courage and persistence.

Patrick Lewis is about Helen Keller, a historical figure who was blind and deaf. In the poem she aspired to learn and discover the world despite her disabilities. The poem shows she was able to do so by utilizing the senses that she did have. In stanza 1 lines 1-4 it states, “My life is such/ That every word/ I love to touch/ I wish I heard.” This quote reveals the fact that Helen Keller can neither hear or see so she needs to use her sense of touch to make inferences about her surroundings. However, I can infer that she doesn’t perceive this as a disability, but rather as an unknown perk in life, as shown in the words “I wish I heard” as opposed to “I must hear”. The fact that she is further learning to overcome, or cope with her disability, becomes more evident in stanzas 3-4, lines 9-16 where it says, “ Such needful crumbs/ Excite my soul/ words taken from/ her finger bowl/ By rule of thumb/ I learn to see/ and overcome/ Adversity.” This quote shows that she still yearns for knowledge despite her disabilities. I can infer that when she says “by rule of thumb/ I learn to see.” It means that she able to look past her disabilities and focus on gaining whatever knowledge she can from the world around her.
