The quote “I’ve perfected the art of shyness ... When I was being my un-shy self, I got a different kind of spotlight ... I got detentions, tested for hyperactivity, ridiculed, hassled, ostracised” is a pivotal scene at the start of the novel, as it exposes Francesca’s perspective of the challenges she faces, showing us that by being reserved in the way that Francesca presents herself allows her to stay in her comfort zone, which doesn’t help her confront these challenges in the best way possible. The use of cumulative listing in this quote emphasises the extent Francesca goes to blend in with others. To Francesca, reserving herself is a benefit, as she is able to stay out of trouble. The reality of her situation is that Francesca is unable to express her true self, as she hides from her problems. This has a negative implication on her individuality, as she forgets about the importance of being different, standing with her morals in consideration and making decisions that will benefit her in the long run, rather than turning having these decisions
