Overcoming Barriers To My College Prep Class

Decent Essays
When it comes to making I’ve always had the basics downs, just come up with something you want to achieve. But after taking this college prep class I realized thats theres more to goal setting than just thinking of something you want to do, you have to see what kind of barriers you have. You have to see if there's gonna be anything that is going to hold you up back. I feel that I have my fair share of barriers but just because I have many barriers does not mean I am not going to do anything to get rid of them. I feel that a major barrier that holds me back is my lack of consistent attendance. This is a problem I have been having since I can drive. I have tried many things to solve this problem before figuring out that the best way to improve my attendance is to not leave school once I get there. Something I would usually do was go to lunch and not come back. The best way for me to avoid this issue is to just stay at school and not leave to the outside world. Another barrier that I have is that I procrastinate a lot. This is an issue that I have actually been improving in. What I have been doing to make sure I don't procrastinate anymore is tricking myself. I tell myself that I am only gonna do half the assignment but then I usually get into a state of flow and finish it before I even realize that I’ve spent a lot of time working on it. The worst barrier I have is that I reward myself too much for not doing good. This is also something that I have been trying to improve on. Lately instead of playing video games or going out I make sure that everything I need to do is done before I can do anything I am interested in. …show more content…

I started attending Lone star college right after high school, at first, I began with the typical high school graduate state of mind, which was that college was going to be a breeze and that it would all be fun and games; more worried about what was going on in my social life rather than studying the books. Especially since I had no real responsibilities to handle or much life experience. Around my first year of college, I started dating this girl and not long after we conceived our first son. Once this happened, my focus slowly shifted from school to working a full-time job at a welding shop in order to provide for my family. I still tried to attend class but was unable to find the balance between work, school and family and this reflected my grades.…

When walking onto a college campus, every freshman knows that a multitude of challenges lay ahead: making new friends, pay off loans, and balancing school and work. Though these are all obstacles, I believe biggest challenge is being prepared for college. Typically, the students with supportive parents, motivation, and career goals are going to be ready for all that college can throw at them. These students ace their AP and college-now classes or are honor students; they represent the small percentage of students that are likely to succeed, about 43% according to the College Board. What about students who aren’t self motivated and don’t have supportive parents?…

The main goal I have right now is important because it affects my grade. It’s important to me because I'm going to need to turn in missing work. In order for my grade to stay up and not go down, I need to be consistent. Another goal of mine to help with grades is to go around asking my teachers for help or staying after school to complete or catch up on missing work, and I can’t say it and not do it because that’s not being consistent. I need to be on top of things and step my game up in the classes I'm failing.…

Of all the movements America has gone through since its inception, I believe the realism movement best-aligns itself with who I am as a person. I believe that we, as humans, are nothing more than a collection of atoms, just like every space-occupying thing in our universe, and that we are no more significant than any other object. A way this belief translates to my every-day life is how I am not a religious person. Most of the popular religions teach that humans are somehow “special”, and they are more important than, say, your bedside lamp; I disagree completely. This ties in directly with the accepting reality element of the realism movement.…
