Overcoming Adversity In The Hobbit And The Lord Of The Rings

J.R.R. Tolkien is a man who was around for a while and saw many things in his life. Tolkien also accomplished many things in his life as well. Tolkien was a scholar in English, wrote multiple books in his lifetime including The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and Tolkien also fought in World War I. Tolkien was involved in one of the most gruesome battles of all time, The Battle of Somme. Over a million soldiers were either killed or wounded during the battle. Tolkien has experienced a lot in his lifetime, but his experiences had influenced his writing and the books he created. I would have to say one of the most appealing aspects about Tolkien is that he has overcame adversity in his life and he has taken those significant moments in his life and turned them into great stories. …show more content…
Adversity is especially a big thing to the hobbits in his stories. These hobbits are small, weak, goofy, un-athletic, and are always on the move. The hobbits encounter adversity a lot, but always seem to prevail in the situation. They encounter giant, tree monsters, trolls, and evil spirits. Tolkien did not make it easy for the hobbits in either of his books. One thing the hobbits had going for them though was their brain. The hobbits were highly intelligent and that helped them out severely in the long run. For example, when Bilbo discovers that he has wandered into Gollum’s lair by accident. Bilbo uses his brain and tricks Gollum by using riddles. Bilbo uses the riddles to trick Gollum into telling him how to find his way out of the mountains. Bilbo beats Gollum in with his riddles and finds his way out. Not only did Bilbo leave unharmed, he also increased his confidence in
