My team was playing against a separate town that was a lot more physical than they should have been with us at that age. For some odd reason, the referee was not calling any fouls against the opposing team. Outside of my academic activities, I have a strong passion for sports and exercise. As a student-athlete for over 14 years, I have learned the value of hard-work, dedication, and determination. Establishing these invaluable attributes early on made it possible for me to become an NCAA Division III lacrosse athlete. Sports dramatically shaped the person I am today and taught me how to step to work in unison with my teammates to achieve a common goal and simultaneously step up as a leader.…

One time I showed grit during my football game. It was during 7th grade and I can’t quite remember who we were playing, but I do know we were winning. It was fourth down and we were going to punt the ball but our coach told us to do a fake punt. When the ball was snapped Jack grabbed the ball and started sprinting my way. I was blocking my guy and the next thing I know I was clabbered.…

When playing sports, adversity can come at any moment, yet it was one specific game that made me realize that anything can really happen. During the summer of 2014, the soccer season was starting to wind up and things were coming to a close. Sitting at the top of the league were Juventus Y, they had not lost a single game, nor tied one. They were guaranteed to win the league and were thought to be undefeatable. Most players later went on to become the core of Team Alberta.…

I remember standing there, trying not to pass out. Luckily I had stayed hydrated and the sun’s heat was not going to be the factor that makes me miss out on this moment. I have been waiting for about two years for this instant to come and here it is: Being accepted into the Cadet Wing. With over fifty days of basic, a whole year spent preparing me to be a respectable cadet at the preparatory school; I was finally getting those shoulder boards I’ve desperately wanted more than anything. Recently, Kania, Meyer, and Ebersole (2009) expressed concern regarding burnout and stress among athletic trainers and provided lifestyles recommendations such as balance of leisure and work, and conducting regular exercise to prevent or alleviate symptoms of stress. However, it is unfortunate that recommendations made in the athletic training literature seem to be founded on findings from either perceptions of experienced athletic trainers or other helping professions, or both (Pitney, 2010). Only a few authors have conducted empirical examination of the coping responses and the sources of stress experienced by athletic trainers (Mazerolle, Monsma, Dixon, and Mensch, 2012). Therefore, more empirical research is required to enhance recommendations…

All my life I was always put down for being small. Standing at 4’11 now as a freshman in college I get comments on my height every day. So when my basketball coach at the end of my freshmen year of high school blew her high-pitched whistle stopping practice to say “Why is the shortest person on the team jumping high than all of you!” I felt the biggest swell in my chest. That moment in practice was a significant turning point in my life that proves I am capable of accomplishing anything with hard work and dedication.…

The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard once said that “life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.” It is almost every athlete 's dream to get to play at the collegiate level, but only 6% of high school athletes who play basketball are given scholarships, giving some of them the opportunity to choose where they want to attend school; all of them are given all four years of their college paid in full. In men’s and women 's basketball there are roughly 345 D1 schools. 28,000-32,000 men and women get the chance to play at the collegiate level and only a handful of them have the opportunity to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The recruiting process for…
