When we think of persevering through difficult situations, we often think of great feats overcome by people achieving the near impossible. The most prominent of these situations is the people that overcome their adversity at their highest point of difficulty. The Roman poet Horace states that “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” Horace implies that those who overcome adversity are more successful than someone that is given something all their life would be. Adversity is, if not, one of the most crucial factors in becoming a successful human being. Overcoming adversity is never easy, no matter the circumstances. These unfortunate circumstances left Giannis no choice but to provide for his family. After becoming a star in the Greek league, Giannis was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013. This was great for him and his family, he was getting paid and sending every penny he made to Greece. This was nowhere near enough for Giannis, however. Giannis wanted to be the greatest player to touch basketball. So Giannis put himself through intense training day in and day out. In the years following, Giannis won two most valuable player awards and an NBA Championship. This never came easy for Giannis, he had no other option. For those given an opportunity like this, individuals will most likely not be as dedicated as they are. Without the opportunity of being selected to play basketball, Giannis never would have had the motivation to be the best player. Giannis went from being a poor kid on the streets of Greece to becoming an international superstar. Another example of adversity is in the novel The Grapes of Wrath, written by John Steinbeck. The Joads were starved, faced loss and persecution. Through their adversity, the Joads were left with no other option but to persevere. They were forced to use the talents and the meager resources they had just to survive.. The most important example of overcoming adversity in my life is my father. My dad, who moved to the United States at the age of 5 with a single mother, searching for employment to support him and his younger sister. They took a chance and moved to Boyle Heights, a small unincorporated area in East Los Angeles, where my grandmother lives to this day. My father grew up in an area where gang violence, poverty, and crime were a daily occurrence. A small family of five living in a one bedroom crammed studio room. My dad had no other option but to get out of the situation. The only way he saw out of this situation was his education, although like his peers who had similar opportunities and challenges his motivation was not derailed by gangs, drugs, starting a family at a young age or easy money.
