Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Being born to two immigrants, who have never completed college, and growing up in a low-income family of six individuals, I have faced nothing but a myriad of obstacles in my life. Although at times I have struggled to overcome these challenges, I have always persevered and pushed past each one with my determination to be the best I can be, which has matured me into the young adult I am today.…

While Struggling with a learning disability such as ADHD, the feeling of discouragement and illiteracy negatively impacted my academics as a child. I have faced several obstacles growing up with ADHD, but I realized that adhd is not a “disability”, it’s the ability to process knowledge at my own pace. That self-confidence is what gave me the encouragement and drive to seek a higher level of education and meet all my life goals. When I was a child and others would ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up”, my answer had always remained the same. I 've always been determined to be a nurse, nursing assistant, or work somewhere in the medical field.…

In the Spring of last year, it was my Junior year, one of the most critical years in high school. It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

I was born prematurely at seven months and diagnosed with a physical disability called cerebral palsy spastic quadriplegia. As I grew older, I could not help but be filled with bitterness and resentment towards my disability, because I could not do things spontaneously. Being disabled brought on this belief that having the ability to walk would solve all my problems. I wished I had a body that was my very own: a body that was in sync with my mind, that moved ever so freely without any restrictions or dependence on mobility aids. I often saw my disability as a burden on others.…

An interesting event that happened in my life that seem bad, but turned out good was attending my junior year and senior year in Puerto Rico. Reminiscing back to when I walked into the halls of Lysander Borrero Terry all I could hear were little voices speaking in Spanish. I could understand what everyone was saying, but I was so confused on why everyone was only speaking in Spanish. As I started my first day of school at the end of the day I came to realize that all my classes were in Spanish and that’s when I felt like I wasn’t able to do it because all I could do is understand and speak slang Spanish. As weeks went by students started to bully me and make fun of me because I couldn’t speak proper Spanish, write or read it.…

In my life so far, I have encountered many obstacles and they have resulted in many failures. When the school year approached my grades slipped from the usual A+ honor roll to not getting an honor roll at all. Of course this was in elementary school, but the lack of motivation followed me well into middle school.…

I challenged myself with difficult classes and pushed to improve every day. However, in some of my courses, I had jumped from regular to AP classes, and it was harder for me to grasp the fast-paced lessons. On test days, anxiety would kick in and I would start to feel nervous. Therefore, I lost confidence in my academic ability. In the following days, I would wait eagerly to find out my grade, and when I finally did, I would be frustrated; after putting in so much time and effort, I did not get the grade I wanted.…
