Overcome Communication Barriers

This essay will discuss effective way to overcome communication barriers, as well as developing a therapeutic relationship with the patient. Four problems will be discussed with solutions specific to the case study, in order to communicate effectively with the patient. As health care professionals, it is in our duty to be concerned with the emotions, thoughts and behaviours of our patients in relation to the worth of themselves and of others; to treat them as a being of worth and in a way that is respectful of them as a valued individual (Royal College of Nursing, 2015). In order to create a therapeutic relationship with the patient and effective communication, there is a need to clear all judgements and focus on respecting the individual; regardless of religions, morals, personal beliefs and age. …show more content…
The transition from being a healthy individual to that whom is currently depending on the care of others, is likely to cause Jack Stone some feelings of emasculation which is furthered by the nursing “asking the same questions over and over again” (Crip, Taaylor, Douglas & Rebeiro, 212, p. 208). Active and sensitive listening to Jack Stone will not only gain an insight into his personal wellbeing, but will also allow for effective communication between the nurses and Stone. This essay will discuss the numerous ways in which a therapeutic relationship may be formed with Jack Stone, while identifying communication barriers.
