Parents want to protect their children from unhappiness and failure, so they are always taking responsibility for their children’s experiences. Overprotective parenting is when parents are controlling the child’s life and the parents are doing everything for the child so they will not feel disappointed. Overprotective parenting is when the parents are doing the child’s chores, choosing the child’s friends and activities for them, solving the child’s problems, and making sure that the child always succeeds. Even though the parents think they are keeping their child safe from all the harmful problems, their behavior has the opposite effect. Overprotective parents tell the child that the world is not a safe place for the child. As the child grows up, they are afraid of taking risks as a result of overprotective parenting. Overprotective parenting lowers the child’s self-esteem and confidence because the child does not think that they can do things on their own. If the child never does anything on their own, (Adverb Clause) they will have undeveloped life skills and they will never learn to handle failure on their own. For instance, if parents are always helping the child tie their shoes, putting things away for them, cleaning up their messes, and doing other tasks that they are able to do on their own, it will prevent them from mastering these life skills themselves.
