Ovarian cancer affects the ovaries, organs within the female reproductive system. Ovaries help assist with the production of eggs that are used during reproduction. Women often have two ovaries, one on each side of the uterus located within the pelvis. Due to their small size, ovarian cancer is often undetected until it has reached the pelvis and abdomen. If left untreated, it is more harder to treat the cancer and could up being very fatal for the patient. Luckily, ovarian cancer has symptoms. The early stages of ovarian cancer rarely show any symptoms. This is why ovarian cancer is often given the nickname “silent killer.” The most common symptoms include trouble digesting food, bloating, pain in the belly area, or urinary problems. Although women report of having these symptoms, they do not certainly mean you have ovarian cancer. However, early symptoms follow a formula. These are epithelial tumors, stromal tumors, and germ cell tumors. Epithelial tumors grow in the thin layer of tissue outside of the ovaries. Ninety percent of ovarian cancers are this type. Stromal tumors grow in the tissue that contains hormone-producing cells. These kinds of tumors can luckily be diagnosed at an early stage rather than the other two types of tumors. Seven percent of ovarian cancers are this type. Germ cell tumors grow within egg-producing cells. However, these are very rare and are more than likely to occur in younger women.
