Ovacaros Cave: A Short Story

Stalactites dripped water all over Alicia and Marion. It was moist, cold, and dark in Ovacaros Cave, at least that’s what they named it. Around twenty minutes ago, Alicia was taking a stroll through the jungle surrounding their hotel. They were staying in Vietnam, and were next door to each other. Alicia had become good friends with Marion, and told her immediately once she discovered the cave. As they were walking through what seemed to be the darkest corridor, Alicia dropped the flashlight, and the compartment holding the batteries unscrewed a bit. As she tried to screw it back on, a stalactite dripped some water right in between the batteries and the wires.
The flashlight went out suddenly, and chills simultaneously ran through both of their spines. Marion cursed under his breath, and Alicia huddled into a fetal position and began shaking. They ultimately agreed to get out as soon as possible, using other means of path finding. Alicia had some scrap parchment paper in her backpack because she likes to draw, and traveled along the paths, and made imprints in the paper that could be understood by touch, ultimately making a map, while Marion prepared for the worst, killing bats with a pocket knife he always carried around, and flash curing them with salt minerals he found in the mine and a lighter, and purified water dripping from the stalactite.

After countless hours of redrawing the map, they had cured bats for dinner and slept, using only their soaked clothes as blankets. The next morning, and the morning after that, and for everyday, they drew maps, killed bats, cured their meat, purified water, and slept, until their last day Marion had killed off all the bats, the salt fumes poisoned the water, making it unable to purify, and there was no more parchment to draw a map. So they lay in their dark tomb, thinking how their demise, was caused by a drop of

A memorial filled publication, volume 62 of the Cleve-O-Grotto news contains an ode to caving by Stephanie Lyons, as well as tributes to both Warner’s Broken Dome Cave, and John Ludwigson. In respect to Warner’s Broken Dome Cave, Dean Wilder recounted a late 1960’s trip to cave, the narrative of which is accompanied by a series of nice images. These images are believed to be the only remaining pictures of the cave still in existence, as the entrance of the cave was unfortunately bulldozed closed by property owners in 1992. The destruction of such pristine caving environments should serve as a reminder to cavers everywhere the importance of both respecting landowner’s wishes, and preserving positive landowner relations. The tribute to John Ludwigson…

I think that the main points illustrated by Plato's Allegory of the Cave are that people only know what they experience and only choose to accept what they have experienced, people who have knowledge have a responsibility to share it and that ignorance is bliss. The men trapped in the cave demonstrate how people will only believe what they have experienced by shunning the man who tries to tell them of the outside world. They aren't willing to accept that there is more to life than the wall and shadows in front of them. Plato believes that even the world we live in may just be another wall that is blocking us from seeing the truth.…

“The Death of a Salesman” perfectly represents how our expectations can be the death of us. Biff, who is the son of Willy, depicts freedom and light as he reminds his father that money doesn’t define him, though Willy is isolated and a prisoner to his dark and twisted mind. “The Death of a Salesman” parallels “Allegory of a Cave” because it expands on the idea of being chained to see a shadow or a tiny glimpse of a bigger picture. Just like in the cave, Willy symbolizes the prisoners; shackled and chained to only see what’s in front of them.…

An allegory can use a situation or event in order to reveal a deeper meaning or lesson. Allegories can act as analogies that point out logical inconsistencies and cause one to reflect and even question their own way of life. In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,” Plato intends to point out the prison-like obedience that humans who are “in the cave” have to their lifestyle, and the difficult choice of giving up this lifestyle in search of something more. This allegory displays the confining nature of life without wonder, or philosophy, and the steps – which can be mentally demanding – to take toward enlightenment. Plato writes this allegory during the Classical Age in Greek history.…

Often times in society, people place more importance on aspects of lesser value. Instead of focusing on the impactful matters, certain people allow the mere opinions and objects of physical worth to dictate their lives and actions. This idea can be visualized in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, where those dominated by public opinion are only capable of viewing a far removed, inaccurate version of reality. While this allegorical image acts as a critical reflection of civilization and various socio-political themes, it also displays other features discussed throughout Plato’s Republic, such as philosophical education, one’s movement towards enlightenment, and the “Divided Line”. With the use of numerous key symbols and metaphors, Plato further…
