Steering For Success The desire for success is the driving force behind many students; however, not all students have the chance at such an ample opportunity like Upward Bound to bolster their success. Upward Bound has continually pushed and prepared me to conquer my goals. At the same time, during my three summers spent on a college campus, I have grown into a new realm of independence. Upward Bound gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone, introducing to new interests and new perspectives. My involvement in Upward Bound has provided me with phenomenal opportunities and guidance to help me as I develop myself and plan for my future.
Setting goals is key to being successful. At the beginning of each year, the Upward Bound staff encourages me to set goals, both long term and short term. One of the most pivotal things Upward Bound has introduced me to is the secret of goal setting: set your goals high, but ensure that they are attainable. Setting your goals at unattainable levels can lead to disappointment;

However, due to my involvement Upward Bound, I had the opportunity to expand and explore my interests in depth. While Upward Bound does have classes designed to prepare students for their upcoming high school classes, they have also developed and planned classes that are designed with students’ interests in mind. Upward Bound takes typical classes and branches them out and into more diverse categories; in my time taking classes at Upward Bound, I have taken classes such as animal behavior, creative writing, and even a Photoshop class. While this may seem insignificant, these classes have had a major impact on who I am and what I want to do; the focus of these classes was learning and exploring while the focus of numerous high school classes is passing a standardized
