1. Max DePree’s father visited the millwright’s wife after his death since he felt it was important that he visits with the family. In addition, he did not know what to do when a key person dies. His father learned that the millwright was a very good poet after the wife read to him the millwright’s work. The visit teaches him to appreciate the diversity of people and their talents and to see that everyone is needed.
2. DePree views participative management as a tool that is necessary for decision-making. It is something that allows people to have a say in the decisions that are made in an organization and also builds trust and relationships in the organization. Roving leadership refers to an art where one takes charge in various degrees and in a lot of companies on a daily basis. It also refers to being available when needed. Roving leadership in organizations demands process, and that all the people in the organization be enablers of one another.
5. DePree suggests that legalistic relationships create an air of spiritual mediocrity and affects the noblest impulses of men reducing productivity. On the other hand, covenantal relationships induce freedom and rest on shared commitment the ideas, issues, values, goals, and management processes. I have experienced a covenantal relationship where a manager had excellent relationships with staff and eventually the organization was really successful.
6. Max defines the approach in three different ways. First, through certain marks like being needed, involved and cared for. Secondly, through the corporation being a place of fulfilled potential where leaders think of themselves as owing and following as well. Max feels very strongly about tribal storytelling in a corporation since it helps demonstrate the values of an organization and their importance to the success of the organization. Just like in a tribe, the tribal storytellers must insistently work on in the process of corporate renewal. They must preserve and revitalize the important values of the tribe.
9. When both managers and employees become stakeholders in a company, the dynamic of their relationship changes completely. This is because the employees feel a sense of ownership in the company and the managers don’t have the same authority over them as they may have heard before. In such a case, an organization requires servant leadership where the managers lead by serving. This leadership style leads to a shift in the organization culture since the position held by the employees’ changes significantly.
10. According to Max, the challenge of good communication is making people listen to what it is one is saying. A leader’s most trusted and familiar tool is good communication skills.
