People may refer to them as weird or even a freak, but their height could also be used as an advantage to reach things other people cannot. Orson Scott Card’s definition of an outsider conveys an idea that outsiders can see things more clearly and are important to everyone around them. He compliments their stronger sense of self compared to the rest of people in society. Card mentions how an outsider has a unique perspective than everyone else and that great heroic deeds are made by outsiders because of this unique perspective. While there is a notion that outsiders are not important, it is clear that outsiders are necessary in keeping a balanced society because they notice the conflicts insiders don’t and can initiate change.…

In class this past week, we did an activity called the Signals Game, which I had actually done once before in high school. When I did it the first time, I was part of culture B, and I remember that I felt like such an outsider, even though there were other people that were in my culture with me. But this time, when we did it in class, I was part of culture A. For some reason, I found I was much more comfortable being in the group that tried to welcome the others than I was actually being part of “the others.” When I thought back on this, I think this really says something about society as a whole.…

The United States is a country built on the oppression of others. It started with the brutalization of the Native Americans, then the capture and enslavement of thousands of Africans, and even today continues on through the mistreatment and underpaying of many immigrate groups. In the United States and even in other countries people are sold the idea of the American Dream, a philosophy that states that anyone can succeed in American if their willing to work hard enough, but so far it is still only a dream. Although no one wants to believe that they have an unfair advantage, in this country certain opportunities are only given to those who are seen as having the “right” skin color, gender and sexuality. Speaking about the injustice in the society…

A basic human tendency when meeting new people is to automatically assume many things about them just based on their physical appearance. People don’t often consider the fact that a person’s exterior doesn’t have any correlation with their interior. Many people struggle to overcome or ignore this bad habit, for it can lead to the downfall of what might have possibly been a great relationship. In the film, The Outsiders, this concept of judging someone by their appearance, seems to be popular and a very important part of the plot. It can even tie in on the factors on who was cast solely by appearance and physical features.…

These are some of the mis-judgments, opinions, and viewpoints others compile before getting to know me, which is certainly untrue. How can one possibly even have a clue of who someone is, without even getting to meet them first? There is so much more to myself than what I may look like on the outside to people.
