“A good education helps us make sense of the world and find our way in it” (Rose 33). These are the words of Mike Rose in chapter two of his book, Why School?: Reclaiming Education for All of Us. After reading the chapter, I found that this opening sentence has so much truth to it. Rose focuses on the experience of education and the impact it can have on a person. He emphasizes how we educate and the experiences that come with it as opposed to answering the question of why we educate. To answer that question, Rose goes on to explain how important education was in his own life and the correlation it had with his situation to the world (Rose 35). He utilizes his real-life experiences to show just that. In Rose’s early …show more content…
He says, “I’ve experienced classrooms as both places of flat disconnection and of growth and inspiration…”(Rose 35). He mentions that his early education was a rough start and a big factor was because the schools he went to were subpar. Rose thinks that to receive an educational experience that will have an impact it is almost essential to have a classroom where one can engage while learning. A big factor of that greater learning also involves the main person who creates a meaningful experience, the teacher. I agree with Rose and the two factors he thinks can positively influence one as they learn. I have been through some schools that did not have a very strong curriculum and it did hurt me as a learner. I found myself with the same “hazy disaffection” Rose experienced. However, I believe that a lousy school is only part of an educational experience and I believe just as Rose that our educators play an important role in our development as learners and humans. If it weren’t for some of the educators in my academic career, I do not think I would be where I am today. Each and every one have played an important role, some more than others. They have helped me grow academically as well as as a person. That is where educational experience plays a part in gaining new perspectives about the world and one's own …show more content…
With him it was psychology that gave him “a set of perspectives with which to look back over my own life” (Rose 37). Furthermore, Rose says that subjects are correlations between two completely different subjects. Those skills learned in one subject can be transferred over into new settings ( Rose 39). It is not until we can relate some of these subjects to own life that we come to appreciate it. Being a biology major, I find myself constantly making relationships with what is taught in lectures and my everyday life. This is especially relevant in my major because I am studying everything involving life. I love to have those real life applications because it overall contributes to me having a greater learning experience and makes me want to “know more” (Rose 39). Rose believes that as we gain knowledge, we also gain more confidence. Confidence that plays a role in our future of learning. I think that can start at a very young
