Doing clinical observations are very important because it gives a change to see student and teacher interactions first hand and get to see how well a student is responding. During my observations at Biddeford Intermediate School, I got the change to shadow an Ed. Teach in a life skills room. Often, accommodations made within the classroom setting can help to support a child who is struggling with maintaining acceptable behavior. Sarah’s behavior negatively affects the learning environment when she wanders around the classroom. If she is not at her desk with her learning materials then she is disrupting her learning. Her focus is not on the teacher or what is being taught and she could potentially miss important information because she is focused on walking around the classroom. Other students might be encouraged by Sarah’s actions to also get up and wander around the classroom, disrupting their learning too. Jayson, a 7-year-old boy, was referred by his parents because they have become increasingly concerned about his behavior not only in school but also at home. His homeroom teacher indicated that he exhibits difficulties concentrating, sustaining attention, and has encountering ongoing classroom problems. While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. For this assignment, I observed Mrs. Walker, a 2nd grade teacher in Media Elementary. Mrs. Walker has been teaching for over 20 years and runs her classroom very well.
